With 160 GB of built-in memory, the Archos 705 Wi-Fi portable media player lets you surf, stream, download, and record movies for easy playback on its crystal clear 800 x 480 7-inch full-color touchscreen. To assist in finding new and exciting media, the 705 Wi-Fi comes with integrated access to Archos' content portal, a service that features thousands of movies, TV shows, and songs for downloading wirelessly to the player. The player also sports an integrated TV program guide you can use to record your favorite TV shows for later playback. And because the device supports PDF files, you can kick back with an e-book in PDF format while on the road or review important PDF documents while away from the office. The 705 Wi-Fi supports MPEG4, AVI, and WMV video files and audio files in MP3, WMA, Protected WMA, and WAV file formats. Bridging the gap between the PC and the TV, the 705 Wi-Fi allows you to stream content from a PC or the Internet directly to a TV or the 705--all through a wireless home network and an optional DVR station. It also features a sophisticated touchscreen, no-button design to ensure simple navigation with your fingertips or stylus. In the absence of a Wi-Fi network, content can be transferred to the device via USB 2.0. The player supports Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. The 705 Wi-Fi measures 7.05 x 4.96 x 7.75 inches, weighs only 22 ounces, and features a music playback battery life of up to 25 hours and a video playback life of up to 5.5 hours.

New Free Widget Pack
Archos has launched a new widget pack that is free for the 705. A widget is a piece of software that adds new features to your player. It gives you fun, quick, and easy access to hundreds of tools, right on the device. The package contains seven widgets, including a calculator, a currency converter, a unit converter, news, weather, a note writer, and a data vault. To be able to use the widgets, you need to purchase the Web Browser plug-in (about $30). Then, you can download the free widget pack via Archos.com.

With a new plug-in, you can transfer recorded movies and TV shows from your Dish Network set-top box directly to your Archos 705. Play back Dish Network-recorded movies and TV shows on the go or on TV--in DVD quality. Multi-language is supported. The plug-in is compatible only with Dish Network STB models 622 and 722.

So this product might be OK if you have no issues, but if you ever need to speak with tech support, beware. So I can't use my Archos for the purpose I bought it. Then, I paid for the web browser plug in and the video plug in, and when I tried to download them, the system tells me the serial number for my Archos is not recognized, so it won't let me install the plugins. I am so angry and so sorry I ever bought this product. So there is no customer services department to call for complaints. I bought the Archos 705 80 gig months ago, and still haven't been able to use it.
But Archos "support" is notoriously bad and you are put on hold forever. I spent over 2 hours on hold today waiting to talk to Archos technical support to deal with this latest plug in issue. I tried calling Customer Services and got what was supposed to be a Customer Service number from the web site, but when you call that number, you get a recording telling youo it is the store and you should use the website to purchase items as they would charge you an exttra $10 to buy over the phone, then they hang up on you.
I'm told this download issue is a common one. I say, it's not worth the risk, no matter how good the product looks online. Because I didn't open the box for a while (I thought I was going to give it away as a gift and then decided to keep it), I couldn't return it to Amazon, so had to do an RMA and return to Archos.
Had I known how terrible technical support is and read all the bad reviews out there on the web, I never would have purchased this product. That took a while. First, it didn't work out of the box.
I was very excited when the product arrived in the mail. After about 3 hours of use I now have at least 1 dead pixel on the screen. The unit heats up a lot. 3. I was looking for a reasonably priced media player so that I could watch my favorite shows on the go or on my couch. Most of the time I have to use earphones.
Very low volume. 2. The resolution is bad and picture is grainy. Low quality video. Here are the reasons:. I give it 3 stars because it serves its purpose, and was reasonably priced.
It is uncomfortable to hold because of this. 4. One of the main reasons for buying this player is that it was compatible with Amazon's Unbox video. 1. I will probably pass it along to my younger brother and try the new unit. Unfortunately I was disappointed with the product.
I would recomend the Archos but the customer service lacks in every sense,If you call the cust/service no one will pick up.(I tried 3 times for more than half an hour each time)The e-mail response is a little better,it only took 6 days to get a response on my defective unit.they told me it would be weeks to wait for them to see if it could be repaired.It was only 4 days old but(i was told)thats thier policy.I called Amazon on sunday,u.p.s. dropped off my new player.Archos should take note on how Amazon does business. picked up the defective unit on Monday,and on Tuesday u.p.s. ANYDVD.com works verry well with Archos,I recomend you look at before you BUY the DVD add-on.
Inside a moving car, you'll hear something, but you'll miss half. Besides, it's an annoying hassle you shouyldn't have to go through with an expected quality product.
I bought mine for entertainment for my kids on a road trip to the USA. It renders this product prettymuch useless for travel.
Dissapointing. Headphones don't change that.
For normally recorded mp3 or video: you'll hear aboslutely nothing on an airplane. There are some workarounds, like completely re-encoding all your movies and mp3's and movies with a 3x higher level sound output, but that can compromise the quality.
Well, this thing does everything you'd expect it to do, exept for one thing: sound output volume is terribly low.
I used AVI files because that is what you can use without wasting money on the plugins. -Even around the house you have to have the volume between 60-80. -It is a video player that does not have much in the way of format support without another $38 for two more plug ins (no.mpeg-2,.vob,.mpg,.ps,.mp4,.m4v, or.mov). -This battery is user replacable.
-Battery life is horrible. This required volume to be cranked to 99 and the Backlight to be turned all the way up. -The earphones leak sound, are mediocre, and fall off when you move around. -Case has a place to hold your stylus so you might take longer to lose it.
All in all. -There is a direct AC charger instead of trickle charging via USB as on previous models. riding the subway. -Hard drive is a respectable 160G. The test files I used are made from DVDs 720x400 at 257kbps 29 frames per second.
THE BAD AND UGLY. I imagine you would have similar problems on a plane. -Nowhere to store the stylus on the unit itself. as much as I liked their other products (in spite of the plug-in scheme) I would look for alternatives to this unit were I you. I bought this device based on my good experience with the 605. THE GOOD. important since recharging eventually beats up a battery and because as shown below the battery life is not great.
Using the settings above (necessary due to the VERY low output of the amplifier and the drakness of the screen) I got 2:02 and 1:59 on two tries after a full charge. -It is a Wifi device with no browser unless you pay $29 for a plug in. I did my tests based on my typical usage. -Even at volume 99 it was hard to hear on a subway. -They use non-proprietary USB ports - a change from previous models. The 705 had on paper looked like a great little device. They claim 5.5 hours in the specs.
