Setting up the 1717 was easy--we just plugged in the AC adapter and the phone cord. We correctly guessed how to set the clock. A sticker on the bottom of the unit reminds you how to reset it in the event of a power failure.

To set features other than the clock, you press and hold the Setup button and follow the voice prompts. To record the outgoing message, you press and hold the Annc/Skip button. As is typical with AT&T answering devices, this was a little tricky, as the same button that confirms your message also resets the factory prerecorded outgoing message. Overall, setup was quick and easy--we didn't have to consult the manual for any feature, but some users will need to if the 1717 is their first answering machine.

When we removed the AC power, it reset the clock but didn't erase our messages; AT&T's Message Guard protects them from power failures. Sound quality is good but not excellent, just as we would expect for an answering machine in this price range.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Quick setup
  • Records up to 59 messages

Cons:

  • Four-minute recording limit per message

AT&T 1717 Digital Answering System (Refurbished) Reviews

Highly recommended (for the price) if you don't mind it breaking down after a year and a half.

I've had this answering machine for 7 years, 4 moves, and 6 different roommates. I find the buttons and remote use pretty intuitive. One of the best purchases I have ever made. It has never given me a problem.

Easy to set up. Great machine. Would definitley buy again. Easy to learn to use.

I have had one for a long time and it served me well. This is a very nice, simple answering machine. Hi,. (I knocked it off the kitchen counter and eventually the impact was just too much for it).I have never found a better one than this, especially for the money.

I never have any problems setting the time, checking the messages or anything. Only drawback is you cannot silence the machine, but you can lower the volume considerably. Do not place in your bedroom. It always picks up and people never have to call back to finish a message. Overall, a truly great machine .

Nobody ever said that they had problems leaving me a message. This machine has never given me problems. Very rarely is a message unclear, but I think that is when the caller talks too loudly into the phone. I think I might even have it had it for over 5 years. Always leaves a clear OGM and records everything perfectly.

I have never had any weird stuff going on with it. I did not even know I had this machine while reading the reviews and only when I checked the picture I realized that I have had it so long I had forgotten what brand/model I had.
