The AT&T 1856 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System offers the home-user peace of mind thanks to its power failure operation that doesn't require batteries. The Speakerphone features three one-touch memory buttons and a 9-number speed dial. The phone is caller ID and call waiting capable with a 50 name/number caller ID history, and features a visual message waiting and new call indicator. A large, LCD display with adjustable contrast controls allows for easy visibility regardless of the lighting. A built-in answering system features all-digital operation for utmost reliability and speed. The AT&T 1856 has memory for 19 minutes of digital recording time, and there is a call screening function that lets you intercept only the calls you want. Very good function for the money. Audio failed after a few days, and unit was promptly and conveniently replaced by Amazon.
Have to put a light on to read it. easy to read and push buttons. I recommend it. Very good quality phone with very good quality sound.
All the features I wanted nice clear speakerphone that is easy to access. Clear sound. Would have given it 5 stars if the ID panel had been backlit. Love this phone.
But the light is usually on anyway, so no biggie. and a decent size caller ID panel.
The only thing I should have purchased one with a removable handset so as not to be tied to the cord. The phone has a good clear sound and an adjustable ringer volumn which I really like. I put a longer cord between handset and phone as the one it comes with is very short.
But (there's always a but, isn't there). the bad news is that although this phone has "Memory Guard," it's NOT the same as a battery backup. You also will not lose stored numbers, your recorded announcement, and other settings. Even tho' the Amazon Product Description says "Power Failure Operation Memory Loss Protection (battery required)" there's no place to put batteries. But the good news is you will NOT lose messages that came in before the power went out (or after it comes back on, although the time stamp for those calls will not be right unless the power went out for only a few seconds). I found this easy to set up, but maybe only because I had a cordless AT&T phone that worked much the same way, so I'm used to the procedures for setting it up.
The answering machine will not work during a power outage, and the clock needs to be reset (easy to do) if the power goes out for even a second. The good news is it's got a lot of features not found on other phones in this price range, notably (for me, anyway) a mute button with indicator that you're in mute mode, volume control for the speakerphone, ability to dial out while in speakerphone mode (no need to take the handset off the hook), and an audible message alert. This is a great little phone, and for the price well, it's unbeatable, and trust me, I compared a LOT of models. You can get and make calls when the power is out, but the phone will not ring, so you need another corded phone that will ring to let you know you've got a call.
Overall the phone is what I expected.It could however benefit from some upgrades. The face could be lighted so that you can see who is calling you without turning the light on.
