Audiovox D1718 7-Inch Portable DVD Player Reviews
I got it last year and so far it seems ok. I wold recommend it. It's probably not the fanciest one but it does the job. A lot of the reviewers seem to hate this item. I'm not an expert on portable DVD players but it does what it's supposed to do.
FYI my repair shop said to invest in a Panasonic unit and I'm going to. Although it is inexpensive for all the features you get, do you want to be buying another DVD player in 3 months when the warranty runs out like I have to. A local repair shop said no one can repair Audiovox units, they are "disposable" since Audiovox won't sell parts to repair shops. I used the a/v out jack to hook it to the TV and it worked- it was a bad connection between the DVD player and the screen. You have to send the unit back, and then Audiovox tells you it will cost $80 to repair the unit. After cooling down for hours it would play for another 10 minutes and quit again. Since we can't have it repaired, we took the thing apart and looked at it.
Don't waste your money on this product. As soon as our warranty ran out, the screen began to cut out when the unit got warmed up- after say 10 minutes. A NEW one barely costs that. It's built with the cheapest components imagineable. (Imagine turning off your kids' show after only 10 minutes, imagine the crying they would do.). The connection on the ribbon cord to the screen was flimsy, no wonder it broke.
I bought one of these for my wife and she loved it soo much she asked me to get one for her sister. it was one of those buys that I was glad for, because on a resent trip having two really came in handy.
Buyer Beware - Audiovox doesn't care one bit about their customers and it seems that they also don't care one bit about the accuracy of their product specifications. Avoid Audiovox products like the plague, as you'll never know what you are getting. The D1718 does not have the Audio/Video IN/OUT feature prominently promoted - still to this day - in the company's own online owners manual. After calling Audiovox, they were not willing to do anything to help me out, nor even make sure that their product specifications on their own corporate web site's owner's manuals were accurate for their product. The AV input is the only major feature that I needed on this - I won't even use the DVD player portion of it. I bought this to replace a previous Audiovox 7" DVD player where the screen went black after only 2 years time (what was I thinking).
When we first receive the player, and we were not happy with the 2"by 1" of battery that is hanging at the back of this DVD is just ackward, our old one have the battery flat at the bottom of the DVD.None the less it is great price for the light wt, thinest durable portable around, we will learn to live with it. I own a Audiovox 7" from 5yrs ago, my kids love it, take it everywhere, but after all the abuses and throwing around, it finally broke down, still have sound but picture is gone. So it is time for new one, knowing how well Audiovox takes abuses from 2 young kids, we select the Audiovox again, for this great price.
