Bose Acoustimass 5 - Speaker System, ideal for stereo or home theater use - Black
The Acoustimass® 5 speaker system delivers the ear-pleasing music of a symphonyor the dramatic effects of your favorite movie. The Acoustimass module produces low notes without audible distortion and can be hidden behind furniture. Rich, full music and movie sound appear to come from the small cube speakers, rather than the Acoustimass module, hidden out of view. Two Direct/Reflecting® cube speaker arrays deliver the warmth and emotion of string and wind instruments. Those sounds are lifelike and spacious thanks to Direct/Reflecting® speaker technology. With a blend of reflected and direct sound, this innovative Bose® technology recreates the way sound reaches your ears during a live performance. You experience the richness of your favorite music, from almost anywhere in the room. Connect this speaker system to the rear channel outputs of your home theater equipment, and enjoy the same superb sound quality from your movies as you do from your music. You can mount the cube speaker arrays to your walls, or display them on attractive stands with our line of accessories.
Experience enhanced sound from Bose's most affordable, next-generation Acoustimass stereo speakers. The Acoustimass 3 system delivers bass that's the deepest and fullest yet. Two single-cube speakers--smaller than ever before--are elegantly designed to fit virtually any decor. And the module easily hides away behind furniture or off in a corner, so all the lifelike sound seems to flow from the tiny cubes. When you hear the Acoustimass 5 Series III speakers, you'll think you're listening to much larger speakers. Yet the spacious sound actually comes from two tiny cube speaker arrays and a hideaway Acoustimass bass module. The improved cube speakers offer enhanced performance, contemporary styling, and a smaller size than the Series II. And the improved module fills a room with even deeper, fuller bass. These Virtually Invisible speakers are the definitive answer to the question of how to combine spacious sound with space-saving design. Though the Virtually Invisible speaker design may seem like a disappearing act, the performance is quite noticeable. Full, resonating bass and crystal-clear highs envelop a room in beautiful stereo sound. It's all the result of years of intense research and testing. The Acoustimass 5 speakers accomplish what no conventional speakers can claim: big, lifelike sound without big, bulky speakers. Now or in the future, Acoustimass stereo speakers can be turned into a home theater set by simply adding the compatible Bose VCS-10 center-channel speaker. For full five-speaker surround sound, add the VCS-30 center-surround speaker package.

Bose Acoustimass 5 - Speaker System, ideal for stereo or home theater use - Black Reviews
I can't believe I bought this piece of crap. I thought Bose was good by their reputation. My friend Carl called me over and put on some music on his home built system. My $1.200.00 Bose system sounds like a toy compared to this.
Not. Sometimes one needs a good short, sharp shock. I was totally blown away. He put on some organ music and I seriously thought the building was going to come down on us. Like my $1,000 Bose system could do this. He laughed like a mad scientist. Tinny, no midrange, deep bass or high trebles. Carl says he will build me a decent system in his cabinet shop.
The detail, the highs the lows, he poured me a glass of single malt and it danced off the table. Oh yeah, listening to Pink Floyd on Carl's system is like dropping acid and he says he can put one together for me for under $1,000.00. He put on Genesis "The Lamb" And my hair stood up. Everyone should have a friend Carl and everyone should avoid Bose. I bought this system and called a couple of friends to show it off. I'm either taking it back or selling it on eBay.
Cons: Bose should make it clear that the bass module is not a powered sub-woofer. Wiring, placement and amp quality are huge variables with this system. Other Thoughts: I've read many negative reviews about these (positive as well).
The bass module is not easily driven, a weak, low current amp won't adequately drive it. System has a good all-round sound for the xbox 360, dvds and for music but fall short of excellent. I would rate them an 8.5 to 9 on a scale of 10. The cubes deliver an amazing sound volume for their size and look great on the top of the piano.
If the buyer expects subwoofer lows from the bass module, it won't happen. It does not deliver any where near the lows of a powered sub. I played with these quite a while during set-up. Lastly, the bass module provides PLENTY of (non-sub) bass when wired and placed correctly.
I replaced inferior speaker wire with high quality Monster Cable and it made a significant improvement. Pros: High and mid-range sounds from the cubes are very crisp, especially during gaming. Bass module is not all that easy to hide. This did not matter to me because I planned to add a sub anyway.
With that said.
Bose won.
Another reviewer said: "Consumer Reports who compared Bose with other products that it sued (and lost)".
Reviewers don't like to be sued.
Every since the law suit, reviewer tend to be bias against Bose.
[In short the courts agree with Bose but didn't award any money because there was no proof that Consumer Reports did the report to be mean].
Bose aren't worth the retail price but are great speakers when you can get them on sale.
the ruling said: "The District Court found that Consumer Reports "had published the false statement with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard.".
The ruling was later overturned only because the higher court did not find "actual malice".
The sound with the reflection is much richer and satisfying than when everything's pointed directly at you. These speakers are meant to produce sound both directly and reflectively. I was having issues myself with sound quality with these speakers until I went to Bose.com and read the user guide. If you have all of the elements pointing forward with no surfaces to bounce off of the experience is not satisfying. You need to tuck the sub away in a corner (to reflect off the walls) and the smaller speakers I find work great with one element pointing directly and the other pointing at a wall (each speaker has 2 elements).
Nice mid range and highs however I quickly found that I will need an "extra" amp to power this sub to levels that seems decent
