It also does self-cleaning as long as it is plugged (even when it is off) so the ink goes away fast. Wrong. It complaints empty ink and wouldn't do anything even when the cartridge still has a quarter of ink. Aside from all these problems, I have to deal with paper jam every time I use it. Not too long ago, it stopped printing yellow and none of the recommended methods can revive the printer head. I am dumping it. I bought a 5840CN a year ago thinking it uses multiple cartridges so I can save money.
The quality of whatever I print is excellent. Saves me a ton of money. It doesn't do all that well with photos, but is certainly good enough for my needs. I should have sent this long ago.I have had mine for a year or so, and just got this second one for a family member. I would recommend this MFC to anyone over any common inkjet printer by any manufacturer. This thing does it all, comes with some very handy software, and replacement cartridges do not have to be name brand.
Color inks disappear at an alarming rate (it eats them while idle) and as stated, the printer is COMPLETELY useless if any one color is low or gone. I think I end up paying a dollar a page when all is said and done. Horrible device.

Even if you don't print, the cleaning system uses up the ink. When the software decides you are out of ink the machine is non-functional until you replace the cartridge. This thing goes through ink like water through a sieve. The ink management system must have been designed by a someone in kindergarter, as a kid in elementary school would have done better. The worst is that the cartridges aren't really out of ink.
