This beats paying 400 dollars for a macro lens that still has the same if not better picture quality. This diopter is excellent. This is a must have for any photographer.
I like taking macro shots and with these, I've never felt like I needed a macro lens. The close-up optics are extraordinary IMHO. My wife bought me one of these in the 77mm size years ago & so when I got some quality 58mm lenses, I had to get another to fit them.
Even then, you may find parts of the subject out of focus if they are even a few millimeters closer or further away. It's small and fit easily into my camera bag, where I would not have had room for a dedicated macro lens. All you need is a lens with a 58mm filter thread). I tried extension tubes, but they were awkward and lost a lot of light. The lens screws onto the front of your regular lens and works best on telephoto and zoom lenses. Note that as with all macro lenses, the depth of field is VERY shallow, so correct focus is critical. The Canon 500D Close Up Lens got rave reviews on several photography forums so I decided to try it. I used it on a Canon EF 70-300 USM IS DO zoom (58mm thread, other sizes are available) with a Canon 30D DLSR and used it on vacation to take photos of flowers at a botanical garden.
(Note: it also fits many lenses from other manufacturers. But for the occasional closeup work, the 500D is a treat. If you do a lot of macrophotography, then a dedicated macro lens (such as the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens would probably be a better choice. I found the lens easy to use and I was very happy with the results. This is an important point to be aware of. I first read about it on a Nikon forum. Maybe that will come later. I wanted to get my feet wet in macrophotography, but didn't want to buy a dedicated macro lens.
The working distance would be around 35cm, and the magnification is good for shots of bees or bigger insects. Basically, if your not an expert, the learning curve is big. magnification: go to 12x zoom, manual focus to the minimum distance and then move the camera until you get the correct focus. I had to read more on the way how to use it.
First was how to get the maximum magnification and then the correct way to focus. DOF at F8 is a little less than 3mm. First shots were totally out of focus and I was kind of disappointed.
I use it with a S3 IS. Focus and max. Now I am using a tripod and getting very good photos. Using the 12x zoom and the close up lens I get better shots that using the supermacro.
