For a mid-priced point & shoot, this is an excellent camera. I am very pleased with pictures I've taken with it. It's easy to use in automatic mode but still has plenty of manual settings when that's what you need.
I started out with an Olympus C-8080 and got this for it's smaller size. I have always heard good things about Canon but I for one, after owning this camera, am not impressed and am going back to Olympus.
Pros:
(1) It's small.
(2) It's perfect for family type pictures (ie..birthday parties, soccer games, family gatherings)
(3) I like the fact that it's basically "point and shoot" without having to worry about manually adjusting it every time.
Cons:
(1) red eye. I have never had a red-eye with my Olympus but this little Canon seems to have red-eye in every picture regardless of setting or lighting. I don't like having to go back later and fix all the red-eye errors it produces.
(2) It's zoom lacks severely. We often go out for rides in the mountains and this camera is horrible for wildlife pictures at a distance. My Olympus maintains photograph quality and integrity even when you crop it. This Canon does NOT. It has a limited zoom and the quality becomes very grainy the more you zoom in. I am very unhappy with that feature.
(3) Picture Quality. I have my Canon set on the highest quality. Granted I consider myself a novice but there is a noticeable difference in my Canon when compared with my Olympus. The pictures are not as sharp or clear with the Canon. Several of my friends and family have also noticed the difference. I am extremely disappointed in picture quality.
(4) battery life: This camera sucks up batteries like crazy. For me it almost isn't worth owning it for the amount of money I have spent in batteries for it!
Overall:
It's a decent camera but it isn't for me. I expect more out of a camera and this one fell way short of the mark. Again, this camera is a great little "family" camera..fun for vacations, parties etc..but if you want to take really good quality pictures I would suggest either moving up the Canon line and spending more money and getting a better camera or move to a different brand. I personally am going back to my trusted Olympus.
My A570 began shutting down each time I tried to use it a few months back after using it for more than two years daily. I searched the web and found that the solution was to insert a very very tiny piece of foam (to add a little spring action) beneath the 'leaf spring' on the + battery side. Afterward, I took it out and took videos for over forty five minutes and still had battery left.
If a larger piece of foam is used, your battery will be scratched.
Happy days are here again. If it doesn't fix your camera problem, buy a new model instead.
I had one of these for just over one year when the power circuitry failed. The symptom is that the camera will power down after less than a minute even with new or fully charged batteries. From my research, this is a wide-spread failure mode for this camera. Communicated with Canon. No joy. I loved the camera while it lasted but I won't do business with a company that will not support their product. I've had six Canon's over the past few years. But unlikely to buy another.
I've been shooting with this camera for more than a year now and overall it's not too bad. I am at a bit of a disadvantage because I really don't have any other point and shoot's that I've used to compare it to. However, I am proficient at full size DSLR's, so I can spot descent quality images. And, I am impressed with the quality of images this little guy has produced. I am also pleased with how durable it has been. I have literally taken this camera around the world on several occasions and it has survived quite a few bumps and bruises. The outer case has many scars to back that claim up as well. I also carry it in my briefcase everyday as well and it's still hanging in there. It has a simple video function that also works rather well. My only beef (and, it's a big one) is this camera EATS BATTERIES! I don't think I have ever owned a piece of electronics that devours batteries like this camera. If you want to own a camera that takes a descent photograph and is rather durable, this one will fit the bill. However, please be warned that you should be prepared to carry an extra pair of batteries with you.
