Come and See Reviews
I cannot really say anything new to add to the praises already heaped on "Come and See." I thought the entire film was magnificent with one glaring exception: The scene with the captive sniveling SS commander under the bridge pleading for his life and claiming he never killed anyone, talking about what a good father he was, etc., etc.
Sorry, but this is not believable in the least. The Waffen SS most certainly committed the kinds of atrocities depicted in the film, and I had no problem with the portrayal of drunken sadism. This being said, the one thing you cannot do with any veracity is accuse the Waffen SS of being cowards. Certainly a captured senior commander of any Waffen SS combat unit in Russia would not behave in the manner of the character in "Come and See."
And please. . .do not write comments calling me a Nazi lover or defender of the actions of the SS. If you REALLY read what I've said, that is nowhere even marginally implied.
This was the most terrifying war film I've ever seen. The Chaos and yet not one overt act of extreme violence, such as a person being shot. The actual moments were cut away. Aside from the use of one minor word of profanity at the beginning, this movie could be rated PG-13, except in the spiritual sense. If there were an "R" rating for spiritual horror, this movie would go beyond it.
Come and See is one of those movies that although you must read the captions because it is a foreign film, you don't even mind because after a few minutes you are so engrossed in the cinematography and story you forget it is not in English. As a historian and lecturer on historical topics, I can honestly say this is one of the best and most realistic films of the WWII genre. It is ranked up there with Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and Letters From Iwo Jima.. It is an accurate portrayal of Nazi brutality towards humanity and the overall insanity of warfare in general. A must see....add it to your collection, you'll want to view it more than once. Bruce D. Don't buy this. The film is in poor quality and some of the subtitles have poor translations. There is also very few dvd features. Buy the RUSCICO release instead.
I saw Defiance some time ago, and when I bought it I read an opinion in Amazon of someone who was strongly recommending this film. So, I decided to purchase it too and give a (new) try to Russian films. But, when I started watching this movie I thought I was in the tunnel of time and that it was Eisenstein rolling Potemkin. The performances didn't contribute also as the actors are terrible and the style of filming is typical of the russian school: loooooong scenes with no meaning at all, looooong takings of the faces which pretend to be expressive but are completely over-performed, ridiculous dialogs, plagued of symbolisms which can have a meaning only for the director but do not contribute to the overall story, etc... In summary, don't waste your bucks in this piece of crap.
