Focusing on affordability, this desktop provides room to grow with the ability to add up to 4 GB of RAM, available PCI and expansion slots, and access to a wide variety of peripherals via its six USB 2.0. It's also chock-full of security and productivity software to get you going as soon as the PC's unpacked from its box, including Symantec Norton Internet Security 2008 and Microsoft Works 9. You can also easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the 16x dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc, and manage your family's photo library with HP Photosmart Essential software.

The Basics

• Processor: The 1.80 GHz Intel Pentium E2160 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PCâ??s capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache, and they have an 800 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

• Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

• Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB, PC2-5300) is a good start, but you still have room to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

• DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

  This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . I bought this computer to replace a eight year old Gateway that couldn't be updated anymore.I considered a Dell but had one of their laptops fry after just three years.I saw this one at Amazon and figured for the price. it was worth a try and I can tell you I am very happy with it.Vista takes a lttle getting used to but the computer hasn't given me one problem,so much faster then my old one.I upgraded the memory to 2 megs of ram it runs quiet and has been very reliable.

Now it boots quickly, runs faster, and *rarely* freezes. The dual-core e2160 processor seems efficient. The mouse feels "right" in the hand; keyboard isn't too clicky. 2-year extended warranty, AND tax. But it's not ALL Vista's fault. Background info: This is the first computer I've ever purchased; owned it 5 months.

But those who want the full Vista experience ought to buy more RAM. I now use Firefox and OpenOffice.org. Overall, I'm very happy with this pc; I'd recommend it to anyone. The tower is very quiet and doesn't overheat. I will try partitioning the HDD to dual-boot Linux (never would have tried this without system restore). There's lots of room to experiment with open source software. I chose this computer because it has lots of storage, features, and a good price.

I paid $560 for pc, 17-inch lcd monitor,. . The preloaded software chews through 1GB of RAM. Vista Premium is beautiful, though the memory usage is a bit shocking. I turned off Aero, set display to "classic mode," streamlined the startup menu, uninstalled Norton, and downloaded security software with a smaller footprint. I consider myself a casual, novice user. Even with Opera, Media Player and my emulator running, cpu usage remains around 6 percent. Norton Internet Security and HP software REALLY slow it down.

It was an excellent way to adopt Vista without the fuss. Wanted a computer (pc or mac) with new OS and suitable for long-term use. Please shop around; as other reviewers mentioned, it's probably cheaper at a brick-and-mortar store. Ripping DVDs and CDs is a total joy with SO much available space.

I bought mine at walmart, same serial no., same specs and every thing. But mine came with a 20 in. I have this PC and I tell it's great, but why does Amazon sell it with out a monitor. LCD, and this only cost me $520

I purchased this computor 1 month before this review was made, and paid around 100 dallors less at Best Buy, than what is advertised on amazon. The graphics are great ( NVIDIA GeForce. Great Buy and quality parts, which is hard to come by. This computor comes with 2Gb of memory ( 2048 Mb ) and a 500 GB. Comes equipted with a AMD Athalon x2 5000 doul core processor and this is every bit worth the money.

The Windows Home Vista is great and my computor runs smooth and keeps cool.

Burning CD's and DVD's are a synch. This a very good computer at an affordable price. I am.

Right out of the box it is easy to setup. This thing is fast and quiet.I added a 19" Acer wide screen monitor and a Bose Companion 2 multimedia speaker system. I have recommended the SR55450F to friends and family and I recommend it to you.
