Fellowes 32057 Powershred P-57Cs Shredder

The New innovative Fellowes P-57Cs with Patent-Pending Safe Sense Technology features an active sensor that stops shredding immediately when paper entry is touched. Designed for light duty shredding in the home or home office, the Fellowes Powershred P-57Cs reduces documents to 5/32" x 2" higher security confetti particles, and shreds up to 8 sheets per pass, 10-20 times per day, for a total daily capacity as high as 160 sheets. Equipped with a 9" wide paper entry, the P-57Cs easily accepts standard letter or legal size documents. The durable steel cutters also accept credit and staples. Electronic auto start/stop features ensures quick & easy automatic shredder operation. Shredder is open in front for disposal of non-shredder waste as well as allowing the user to see when 5-gallon wastebasket is full. The P-57Cs also has a pivoting head with a handle that makes waste removal quick and easy. Sheet capacity gauge helps prevent paper jams, while the reverse function easily removes paper jams.

Fellowes 32057 Powershred P-57Cs Shredder Reviews

I've bought a lot of electronic devices from Amazon, but this is absolutely the worst purchase I've ever made. I openly admit that I should have returned it during the grace period, but didn't. I moved to a new home and opened a new business, so this wasn't a priority. In retrospect, I have to say that this shredder never worked. I did everything according to the manual to make it doable, but this so-called-tested machine would not feed documents and stopped half way through shredding every time. Based on the experiences of other folks with this machine, and my observations of what it is/isn't doing, I must say that I got a lemon. Since I can no longer return it, I'm trying to make it work for me. The problem is that the contact switch in the shredder head does not depress and so will not function. My solution has been to place a heavy weight (cinder block) on the switch side so that I can at least shred a bit. I should have returned it right away, and take responsibility for that, BUT I am bummed out that I must eat the cost of such a defective product. AND I never noticed that after 5-7 minutes of shredding, it overheats and shuts down for a 20 minute cooling off period - this is NOT my idea of a user friendly machine.
Mea culpa, Caveat emptor ,..

I researched this item on a few different online shopping sites and I agree with most of the comments. It is good for light use (although the first thing I did was shred two 30 gallon garbage bags full of stuff to purge lots of old documents). It powered through all of that with only one jam, and that was with more than the number of rated pages (10-12?). It is not as loud as I thought it would be, but I won't be running it inside while the kids are sleeping. I also like that it effectively has two on/off switches (one on the top for forward/reverse/off) and a standard on/off switch on the side. This, combined with the other safety features are great if you want an extra layer bit of protection if small kids are wandering around the house.

Totally great for the price. Definitely recommend it.

We've only used this shredder a few times but the first time was to catch up on the pile of old bills waiting to be shredded since the old one burned out. It was also a Fellowes and lasted several years. I read a lot of reviews and compared prices of different brands. Things have changed! We chose this one because we felt like it was a good price for the capacity. Our old one was only a 5 page shredder so it's a step up.

The automatic feed feature is great. Our old one did not have that so the motor ran until you turned it off. That really helps extend shred time before it has to "rest". This lid is also much easier to lift off and you can tilt it back to push the contents down.

It seems every review I read talked about shredders not taking the page capacity stated. Paper comes in so many weights that's going to vary. The important thing is how easy they unjam. This one clears quickly every time by using reverse. We use the oil as recommended too. If something does happen, I feel I can count on customer service based on other reviews.

Just go ahead and order a new set of plastic gears (direct from Fellowes) if you decide to purchase this--you'll need them. I've owned this shredder for about 22 months, with very--and I mean VERY--little use. Today I started shredding old documents, 5 or 6 pages at a time...about five minutes in, the machine gave out. Motor running, no shredding.

Thanks to previous Amazon reviewers, I realized the plastic gears Fellowes uses had likely given out...sure enough, after taking the shredder head apart, I found one of the gears broken into four pieces. I wonder how badly it would have been torn up if I'd been trying to use the machine at the capacity advertised!

Fellowes customer service was nice enough. I'll be able to continue shredding in 8-10 business days, $18.25 poorer (the cost of the replacement gears, including UPS shipping). I wish they offered actual metal gears as replacements; but hey, why should they bother when they can sell a set of plastic gears every year or so? Weird way to develop repeat customers, that's for sure.

This machine DOES NOT do what it's advertised to do. If you don't have the patience to sit and feed four or fewer sheets through it, order something else.

UPDATE: Fellowes delivered the replacement gears within 7 business days. Even better, the section of the gears that previously failed is now metal. (Ask and ye shall receive!) I've been using the shredder regularly since, still watching 'load' levels, and it's doing a good job.
