G-Tech 913003-01 G-Drive 500GB Quad-Interface External Hard Drive Reviews

It is extremely quiet in use. They are worth the slightly higher price compared to other hard drives of similar capacity and connections. I have purchased numerous Firewire external drives (including Lacie, Western Digital, and Caldigit) and this G-tech drive is the fastest and best that I have ever owned. I shall not hesitate to purchase additional G-tech drives in the future.

It is very fast when used with Firewire 800 and even faster when used with eSATA connection. The drive is very well made, attractive and matches my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro perfectly. This light is so bright and large that I find it distracting. Tom My only complaint with the drive is the very large and bright white activity light on the front of the drive.

By now it is the second week of October. Three unanswered emails led to two phone calls only to find out that they did not retrieve the files but would try to locate the bad device so that they could get the files. I returned the original device with instructions to retrieve the files. Huerta I call again to speak to a manager. The fact is that I am out over 10,000 images and I needed some long breathing sessions to release my frustration at such irresponsible customer service. I purchased one of these drives in April 2008 for storage of a vast photo library.

They could, however, send the original drive to an outside recovery company (of course, for a hefty fee). Three days later I am informed that they were unable to retrieve the original files. In mid-August it crashed. Five days later I am informed that the device has been found and they have the files. I contacted G-Tech (a whole adventure in itself with no 800 number and 15-20 minutes wait time for a representative).

Three weeks later a new drive arrives but no files. After four unanswered emails to Mr. Two more weeks of waiting, no files. This from their rep, one Miguel Huerta.

Then the real odyssey begins.

A power cable was replaced on one of the Qs while under warranty with G-Tech's very quick and helpful technical support. Considering that cable replacement was needed after one of Apple's lamentable updates - as the Internet buzzed over "Casper madly flinging firewire devices injuriously from 'fruit'" - and the computer itself went under, we may look tomorrow and sea the actual floor of the Atlantic, itself, with a few shiny G-Tech Qs (and Lacie Big Es) marching formidably across. . For some other vendors I can't say the same, but G-Tech Q drives (nor the LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ 301199U 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire400/FireWire800 RAID System) give any problems. Hunky, brawny, built, mad, bad, bank, backed, stacked, packed, all that, chips, uncommon, unrivaled, unmatched, unheard of, unm-unm-humh. These drives are magnificently designed and built, and G-Tech offers excellent support.

Already formatted to work with Time Machine. Lookes great. Has Firewire 800. The perfect fit for the Mac Pro as an external HD for the Time Machine Application.

It has all the interfaces I could ever ask for. I'd like to note that G-Technology actually honors a 3-year warranty for all of their G-Drives now, so make sure to register your product once you receive it. Working perfect as a Time-Machine volume. I have owned the G-Drive Q 500GB for about a month now and have had no problems what-so-ever. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
