Tom I've used it to transfer 100s of gigs. So I wanted a big external HD. It is quiet. I'm a power user.AND I like this. It is reliable, NOT slow. It has to be reliable.
just like many others have stated the drive works just fine but is pretty loud. and big. due to the noise i will buy another brand next time.
It installed fine straight out of the box (on a PC), and hasn't given me any trouble since. It just sits there, shines its blue light and - works. I don't consider it particularly noisy either. I bought this drive six months ago as a backup device.
Oh well. I should have gone for the Western Digital. I tried to use it for Time Machine but when I turn it on and the Mac boots up, I always get a prompt that the computer does not recognize the Drive and that I should format it. The price is tempting, but the drive rarely mounts on a Mac.
I had to hunt through the support pages at the Iomega site to find instructions on how to repartition for Mac compatibility. I've had no performance problems so far; it's relatively fast. It's not brand new on the market; I'd have though Iomega might have included info about repartitioning for Mac by now. However, while the drive is Mac compatible, it isn't automatically so, out of the box.
