Kingston 8GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed DataTraveler 110 (Green) (DT110G/8GB) Reviews
+ Retractable USB head is convenient - No caps. + USB 2.0 connection is backwards compatible for older computers. The body is much smaller, about half the size. The Kingston DT100/8GB Data Traveler 100 8 GB Drive is sleeker and comes close to the performance and features of the Sandisk Cruzer.
8 GB capacity is very useful for large file backups or USB storage and transfer. + Very light case. + Rear hole to connect a lanyard or keychain.
Overall this is a good product. The best way to enable encryption may still be to use another tool to encrypt the drive after re-formatting it. + Compatible with old and new Mac and PC Operating Systems (XP, Vista, OS X). It also has a retractable USB connector but a smaller hole for attaching a lanyard. This is definitely an improvement over the standard design for the Data Traveler. The retractable head still works though, and the case does seem more durable than the standard body design. Unfortunately, it's also much larger than it needs to be and among the slowest drives in the Kingston USB family.
The case is also somewhat bulky and makes it hard to plug it in next to other devices or on laptops that have recessed USB ports or those locate right next to the power jack. - Doesn't have the good looks of some drives like the Sandisk Cruzer Micro. + Less scum-ware and needless apps than some other drives. Kingston still competes well on price, but the Sandisk outperforms it. If you need a durable thumb drive at a great price, this is it. If you need optimum performance, look elsewhere.
On a price per gigabyte, the Kingston 4GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed DataTraveler 110 (Red) (DT110R/4GB) often offers a better price but with less capacity and future flexibility of the 8 GB model. - Bulky size makes plugging into tighter USB slots difficult. This way you can test the drive as well as use the encryption you prefer. The Kingston 8GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed DataTraveler 110 (Green) (DT110G/8GB) is definitely affordable, durable and effective. Pros:. And at current prices, it's almost a no brainer despite the cons.
Now if you need a smaller sleeker body and better performance, look to the SanDisk 8 GB Cruzer Micro. + Nice capacity of 8 GB has you future proofed as smaller USB drives start to disappear. - Still somewhat slow speed in copying large files, limited by USB transfer rate. - Speed could be better, though it's acceptable. + Easy to format and enable encryption to protect your data. Conclusion.
+ Durable body and NAND memory stands up to a lot of abuse. The retractable head and decent price are attractive. + Kingston brand is perhaps under-rated, almost as good as Sandisk. - Drive is still larger than it has to be. I'm not crazy about the stubby body but at least the end doesn't break as easily as the DT. If you need the smallest drive available and better performance, go with the Sandisk Cruzer Micro.
Enjoy. The DT110 isn't as good ad that one but it's still a slight step up from the Kingston 8GB DataTraveler USB flash drive. + Very quickly mounts and stops. Cons:.
Transfer speeds are still slower than what you would like but acceptable for transfers or on-the-spot backup copies.
I have given the product one star for it's failure to function flawlessly across multiple systems. Physically this is a nice device. When I try to write to it Windows XP gives me write errors (it says "Delayed Write Failed"). If I find that it is the computer that is at fault I will revise my rating. It's a little too thick, but tolerable. It works on my laptop, and other USB drives work on both computers. Unfortunately I've found that it does not work with one of my computers. The connector latches both out for use and in for storage.
In order to transfer several large files/programs between my desktop and my laptop, I used to use external hard drives. Also, the DataTraveler is incredibly fast. In terms of reliability, I have always had good luck with Kingston, and the functionality is great, thus 5 stars. Much faster than older USB sticks, it is actually fun to use. While great for really big transfers, such drives have their drawbacks, especially when they need to be shut down before unplugging. The Kingston 8 GB DataTraveler to the rescue: I find that for quick transfers, this USB stick is more than sufficient. While I like the retractable connector, I am not overwhelmed by the overall design but that's just for the eye. The 8 GB capacity ensures that I have plenty of room, even for image or music files - have yet to run out of space during a transfer.
I tried a Cruzer which has a similar design but it does not lock into place; and when you try and connect it to your PC, it slides back inside. The speed at USB 2.0 is pretty good, 100Mb in about 10 seconds. How very annoying. Buy it, 4 GB is about to be passed up as the sweet spot in Flash Drives for the 8 GB drives.
I will maybe buy 1 more in the future - 32 GB. And, no U3 software to get in the way. One major purchasing point is that there is no cap to lose as other reviews have stated and that this sliding type drive 'locks' into place. Accidentally clicked 4 stars - Really 5 stars. I don't need any of that junk.
The 8GB has plenty of space, which I need, because I tend to NOT delete anything on my drives, LOL. This is my third flash drive, after a 512mb huge clunker bought in 2002 that is about the size of those mini Leathermans and a 1 GB no name drive purchased at Micro Center. I like the green color and the plastic looks like it can take a fair amount of abuse.
works great. and at 8 GB you can put just about anything on it.
