Seems like a fine product. I've had this product up and running on my home Network for about a month now non-stop and it hasn't failed yet.
I just followed the instructions and called the cable company (Comcast) and gave them the new MAC address and it was up and running with no problem. Oh well. But that was when I learned the rest of my equipment had been fried by a lightning strike. It is reliable and works just fine with my Netgear wireless router.
Comcast said I don't need to buy a new modem and there will be no difference on speed with a new modem because my old modem is on their approved list but I exprienced the slow Internet speed with old one. After replacing, the speed difference is amazing. DCM-200 gave me only 4700kbyte for download 1700kbyte for upload at http:/speedtest.net but CM100 give me 18000kbyte for Down and 8000kbyte for up. I am very happy with my new Linksys CM100 and highly recommend it to whom wants to get all your Internet speed back. So I researched a new modem and met Linksys CM100. I was using Motorola SB5120. Last Saterday, the lightening hit my home and cable modem and router were gone. so I had to replace the cable modem with my old D-link DCM-200 that I used 6 years ago.
Btw, it's matched with a D-Link DIR-655 wireless router. I can't really see a 6-fold improvement in average browsing, but the local bottleneck is now gone and now dependent on the multiple websites and jump servers' performance. Our speedtest.net speed went to 31000kbps down and 3000 up (little less in evening). Installation and advising Comcast of the new MAC address took minutes tho one would think there would be an easier way than calling a call center.
Another btw - there's no direct link between the speedtest speed results and the actual kbps you see when you download a file - the latter depends on the website and other intermediate architecture. The change was nothing short of DRAMATIC. As both old and new modems are docsis 2.0 I NEVER expected this kind of improvement and consider it $$ well spent. Last btw - the USB connection is Not for external storage like routers have, it's an alternative way (to the ethernet connection) to connect the CM100 to your PC (havent quite worked that one out - guess there must be some mobile PCs that dont have CAT5 connections or can one use them simultaneously to 2 PCs).
Though there was nothing fundamentally wrong with my old Linksys BEFCMU10 V2, we were just not getting anywhere near the speeds claimed by Comcast on the eastside - only got up to 5000kbps down and 1100 up (speedtest.net) - eventually had a tech come out to check all connections and redo splitters - he recommended a CM upgrade tho I believed a CM is a CM. So we splashed out on the latest 4x4 inch baby from Cisco/Linksys.
Constantly dropping the connection to the computer. My wireless connectors are happy,they dont bother me anymore either, they are also always connected. The wireless was a problem also. Im happy.
You pay a little more, but my motto is "you get what you pay for". A win situation for me. I constantly was experiencing problems such as slowness on the web, everyday being dropped, having to shut down and restart, or disconnect and bring back in. Along with that i installed a new wireless router , Belkin N1 Vision.
Both are easy to install and most importantly, SOLVED ALL MY PROBLEMS. I had a linksys wireless router and cable modem in one unit. On the wireless computer, I use a Netgear WN311T. My lucky day was the day I ordered the Linksys CM1OO cable modem.
