Linksys Network Optimizer for Gaming and VoIP

The Network Optimizer for Gaming and VoIP from Linksys streamlines your home network for next-generation Internet applications. By applying various Quality of Service (QoS) techniques to your network traffic, the Network Optimizer makes sure time-sensitive applications like online gaming and VoIP calls run smoothly. The Network Optimizer sits between your home router and broadband cable or DSL modem, and monitors the data going through. It automatically determines what data is time-sensitive and what isn't, and prioritizes delivery of that data to its destination, ensuring the best-possible performance for the various types of data that go through your network.
Traffic prioritization helps make sure that your online games don't lag when someone else on the network is surfing the web or sending email. Voice over IP phone calls sound cleaner. Outgoing streamed video from your Internet Video Camera runs smoother. And the best part is that the Network Optimizer takes care of prioritizing the data automatically, with no user setup of QoS policies required. After a simple installation it gets right to work, enhancing your network's performance and helping you get the most out of your high-speed Internet connection.

Linksys Network Optimizer for Gaming and VoIP Reviews

overall, I think it works as advertised and network performance doesn't suffer as much as some claim. You cannot dynamically 'switch it on' when a voip call comes in or you make oen it's just on. I've had this for a few months; with the exception of my TiVo box not being able to "call home" it has worked. I solved the tivo problem by adding another wifi adpater in front of the network optimizer, and the only thing connected to it is the tivo. And there's no adjustments you can make to re-prioritze packets. With everthing in life, there's tradeoffs you just have to decide what's more important. I've noticed that "the longer it's up" the better the overall performance is if we have a power outtage, I notice network traffic is bad when it 1st comes back; then seems to "even out" I don't know if the optimizer is doing some "learning" or not but it's a side effect I've noticed.

As noted by some "1 star" reviewers, it does slow the rest of the network down. I've not seen 3 meg to 400K changes; but it is slower, which i would expect for something altering the QoS of packets on the fly w/o knowing "what's next". it works; and it makes voip calls very usable for me (before, i rarey made them except when someone else was on the landline). When I'm on a call; the network crawls; and sometimes when I have a LOT of downloads going (10+) it also seems slower; but it's a trade off is the phone call more important, or is downloading.

The I was getting complaints of VOIP quality issues. When I first got it seemed to work great.

Maybe a heat issue. I had to disconnect it for a about an hour to get working again.

It returned to where it was purchased. Disconnecting the device Correct my issues.

More than one person describe me as sounding like I was on spaceship. Then it locked up and nothing could get out to the internet within about 3 days of having it setup.

I bought this device to enhance VOIP on my home network. I have QoS turned on my linkSyS router and that seems to work well for my setup.

Going to return it. I have Vonage VoIP service. Call quality is bad when I am downloading and uploading torrents. Call quality is acceptable most of the times.

Made no difference. Planning try Hawking broad band booster and see if that help. Overall, no improvements by using this device. Call quality remained as bad as it was during torrent downloads and uploads.

Tried tweaking few parameters at the console. Followed the instructions, got it installed and was expecting improvements during torrent activity. Thought this device may help by managing the available bandwidth well. Did not help.

My Comcast service has been fine, but Comcast obviously changed some things when they took over Adelphia that did not agree with Vonage. The Linksys OGV200 has saved my Vonage. My side of the call has always been perfect. Often and only after Comcast took over from Adelphia, the downstream side of Vonage calls broke up so much that the people I called could not understand the conversation and it became necessary to disconnect and use a cellphone. Worth note is that this problem did not exist with Adelphia, only Comcast. After accidentally running across the OGV200, I made the purchase with little hope that it would solve my Vonage/Comcast problem. Was I ever wrong. To my knowledge, since I installed this little device, Vonage has been perfect to the point it's almost unbelievable.

Of course you cannot get out of the natural law of physics. We telephone family around the Globe with our Voip Telephone. Your bandwidth is your bandwidth. This works seamlessly. But what you get is a very orderly and smooth operation of your data flow through your internet pipe.

You cannot get a gallon out of a pint. This little item improved the quality of the calls immediatly. I recommend this to ANY person with a family and a Voip Vanage Telephone. No more dropped calls.
