It sleeps when the light is low. If it ever runs out of power you have to set the time zone again. Solar atomic clock is a great idea. This works well once you configure it. It takes a while to pick up the correct time, but that's not a real problem. The only configuration you have to do is setting the time zone.

An almost perfect time piece. Needs no power and maintained all settings when left in a dark office for 2 weeks. The clocks maintain the correct time, even during a change to or from Daylight Savings Time. I purchased 2 more of these clock after evaluating one for more that a year.
