magicJack: PC to Phone Jack Reviews
Sign me up. Smooth installation in each case. Like a Mac, "it just works". perfect dial tone.
The website is a bit quirky and hard to use, but not the hardware. Twenty bucks a year for nationwide calling. This thing is amazing; I almost don't know what to think about it. The sound quality is hard to tell from a regular landline. Made lots of calls, received a few, no problems of any kind.
Plugged a old phone in and. I installed it on a old Dell XP desktop and an '08 MacBook Pro running Leopard. We all knew the wireline companies were doomed, but Magicjack is going to accelerate the trend.
For example, I called my MagicJack number from my Vonage number and tried to leave a message for myself and the message did not come up when I later checked my voicemail. Then you just plug in any regular telephone to the MagicJack device, and you are ready to make calls. I went to the website for the MagicJack, and ordered one for $39 plus $6.95 S&H, which is billed after your 30 day trial period. When I heard about the MagicJack on a local computer-related radio show, I thought this would be a great way to cut down on my monthly phone bill.
The first year's cost is higher than subsequent years, because you are paying for the cost of the device in addition to the service. All in all, I would not recommend it as your primary home phone, but it may be useful if you don't have good cell reception where you live, or are looking for a way to cut back on the number of minutes you use on your higher priced home phone service. There is noticeable background noise in most calls while using the MagicJack, and sometimes there are gaps while you are listening to someone speak. I currently use Vonage as my home phone provider, and the sound quality on the MagicJack does not compare to that of Vonage.
After your first year, you pay $19.95 yearly to use the MagicJack. I downloaded the software from their website (it shows you what numbers you're dialing on your PC screen, and allows you to click to call or redial a number), and then plugged in the MagicJack to an available USB port on my PC. Another problem I found was that the voicemail is not very reliable. In contrast, when I use my Vonage service, my PC does not have to be on, since calls go through the provided VoIP phone adapter which has its own power cord.
If you're not the type of person who normally leaves your computer running all day, then you can count on higher electric bills if you want to use the MagicJack as your primary home phone. Unfortunately, in my trial usage of the MagicJack, sound quality has been less than stellar. There is also one other consideration that the people promoting the MagicJack don't tell you: since it is powered by the USB port on your computer, you must leave your computer on whenever you want to make or answer calls through the MagicJack (people calling you can still leave messages on your voicemail if your PC is off, provided the messages they leave are actually saved, as I mentioned above). The MagicJack was easy to install.
You can go online and forward your MJ number to another number in the event of a power outage too. You can't go wrong here. I just love this and with my family all over the country it's really great to talk long distance all I want to, with landline quality, free. I believe the previous reviewer may have received a defective unit or something. What I love about the voicemail is that every voicemail generates an email and you can listen to your messages on any computer (or of course you can access it from your phone). My magicjack is great - quality as good as landline and so close to free. This phone comes with all the services you could want those that the phone company charges $6-$8 monthly for each one.
Easy & Clear installation. Wonderful & Simple product. shipped within 4 days. Saves a lots of $$$ on long distance calls.
I am in Korea and it just got blocked, along with vonage and every other VOIP. if you are in the miltary dont buy this.
