You have to take a deep breath and then give it a good blow to get a loud shrill. However it is not as loud as the Fox 40 Mini Whistle which actually costs less. The Fox 40 Micro Whistle has a compact size.
Compact and loud, but a year after keeping it handily on my shoulder strap, the part that attaches to the ring broke (it is plastic).
Very disappointed in this whistle because, well, it doesn't whistle. It just sounds like air being blown through a piece of plastic. Purchased for safety reasons but now need to find something of better quality.
The shippging was too expensive it was more then the price of the whistle. Not like the other fox 40. Another thing that bug me is that you have to blow very hard to have a loud sound.
I am very pleased with the sound and the style of this fine little whistle. I was also delighted with the set of 2 handy, different sized key rings that were included.
