This Midland GTX900VP4 radio works very well. The miles separating the radios are not 10-12 miles and I knew this before purchasing the set, I can reasonably get 4-5 miles while camping on flat land along Lake Ontario with only a few trees between the sets. I did my best to research the various radios and this set was rated #1 from many sources. New models will appear as time goes on with more and better features but these will remain useable for many years. I do like the weather feature- comes in loud and clear from weather broadcast locations many miles away. I purchased these along with headsets to be used while traveling the sound is so bad that these have never been used so essentially I purchased to unusual paperweights.
I would not recommend this product to anyone.
I purchased these radios for backpacking. My wife stays at camp and I take off and fish and we like to be able to communicate. The radios worked very well with no static or interference. I made them part of a group with a privacy code and we heard no other radio traffic. I didn't even realize I had the radio with me until my wife called. My only complaint is the size (they are fairly large) and weight (they are a little heavy).

I like very much this radios, the voice scramble funtion is great, i got 1.5 mile of range in the city
So far I'm happy with the radios. The 30 mile range is ridiculously over rated (for all but extremely ideal conditions) but still overall the radios performed very well. Last week a group of six couples took a road trip and we used the radios to communicate between vehicles and they worked well. The battery life is excellent and the clarity of sound was very good compared to a friends older radios.
