Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Reviews
A larger unit may be better for a pro but for an amateur this unit is handy, compact, and much easier to use. Have not used it to a great amount yet but what I have done has shown a great addition to the cameras function.
If you cannot decide between Nikon D40 and D60, take the D40 and buy this flash for the saved money. Indoor pictures look just brilliant, when the flash is turned up to the ceiling. This is a really great item. No more white and shiny faces, long live the true colors.
It is also not compatible with the CLS that Nikon is famous for. It does not however rotate sidways to allow side bounce. This is a great little flash for the 40, 40x, and 60. If light weight and low cost are paramount the sb-400 is great, if not at least consider the sb-600 or it's bigger brothers. It gives you the ability to bounce the flash upwards to reduce the dreaded white face of normal flash. That said, it is much better than the built in flash but does not compare to the sb-600, sb-800, or sb-900.
Great job Nikon. Matches well with my D300. Works great even bouncing off cathedral ceilings and large spaces. What a great job this little flash does. More powerful than you would think.
I am not a pro but carry my Nikon D40 all over for impromptu shots. I am not into HEAVY so the camera and flash must be lightweight and provide the technology for exceptional shots. I recommended this flash for all the reasons above and no negatives. Jimmy 6000 The SB-400 is small enough to carry around and does exactly what I want when I need a flash.
