Panasonic Dect 6.0 Dark Grey Cordless Phone with Answering Machine (KX-TG6433M) Reviews
Generally, this is a pretty nice phone system. As far as the actual phone functions go -- it does exactly what I would expect it to do without any issues. Good sound quality and all the rest.
My gripe is with the answering machine. More specifically with the user interface design for listening to messages from one of the handsets. Given that this is the most commonly used feature (not counting simply making and receiving calls), I shouldn't have to go digging through multiple layers of a clunky menu system to listen to my messages. It feels like I'm using a 1980's era VCR. You remember those? The one with clock eternally blinking 12:00 because nobody could figure out how to set it properly.
In an era in which comparatively fancy cell phones can be had for dirt cheap (I just bought one, unsubsidized, for under $20), I don't understand why cordless phone makers are still stuck in the dark ages of user interface design.
It really wouldn't take much to make this better -- just a different attitude towards user interface design.
I love the extra handsets that can be placed in other rooms. But even turned all the way up, it is hard to hear the talking Caller ID or the answering machine messages, especially if the TV is playing or people are talking. The phone is mainly used by my mother, who is hard of hearing, but I also have a problem with the volume. Wish I'd returned it.
Compared to our old V-Tec phones, there is no comparison. These phone are easy to setup and use, have great range and no annoying buzzing sounds like the old phones. It is great that they operate on a different frequency range than all of our wireless router and nic cards and so we now finally have some decent phones with nice backlighting to be able to see to dial at night in low light conditions depending on where you are in the house! Big improvement over V-Tec!
I reviewed a number of systems before purchasing this one. It's great - the phones are compact but comfortable to hold. They're easy to use. The displays are bright and easy to read. The battery life is good. The sound quality is good. You can check your messages from any phone and I love that each phone has a yellow light on it that blinks when you have a message. You can also page other phones from any phone. The only negative thing is the talking caller ID - I find that the voice is hard to understand because the names are often mispronounced. Other than that, everything about this system is great and I'd recommend it.
This is the second set of Panasonic phones I have purchased in my 10 years married. The first survived being dropped in toilets, pots and everywhere else (after kids of course :)). This set is such a big improvement on my old set. Not only does it announce who is calling (even as it is programmed), the phone book that you set on the first phone is available on all phones!! That is a huge plus!! There had been so many times, with my previous set, that I needed a number but it was saved on a different phone. Sound quality is good, the phone is super light and crystal clear! Definitely recommend!
