The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD recorder is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. I bought this b/c of the VHS/DVD combo. Our daughters still want to see ALL the Disney Princess VHS movies so I thought to combine the two would be a great move. after a while waiting (over 15minutes) I then unplug the power cord to reset it then it spits out disc. It litterally stopped recognizing the disc after playing and it got stuck inside."reading error" and it just stopped and not doing anything. The DVD started to give me hard time playing the DVD that we've burned from CVS as a picture/music slide shows.
It's a nice unit, easy to set up, be sure you've got your cable box on pbs- and be ready to channel up on the unit if you normally use channel 4,Very easy set up just follow the on screen instructions, The unit is up to date and recognizes all copy protected encryption, I do like the double recorder capability.
I got this set thinking this is just everything I needed DVD recorder. 4) Constantly reject DVD+RW disc and show is a bad disc.(waste disc). Take my advice, DON'T BUY THESE 2 Model I already tried. I exchanged another same set, it still has same problems. Very disappointed Panasonic will make such low quality DVD recorder at such high price.
3)you can not record over the air TV program onto VCR tape, so, if your DVD ram is full, the VCR can not help you to tape more programs. But, I was very disappoint for 1) very often skip scheduled recording 2) periodic lock up and gave N99 error code,(frequent needs reset). So I got my money back and purchased a Panasonic DMR-EZ17VK (the set without VCR) thinking maybe the combination set has design problem, guess what, It had same problem as the other 2 sets but just less frequent lock up. by the way, these sets will not play VCD disc. I am not sure there is design problem or QC problem, because all these sets are all made in China.
Ironically, it's the dvd portion of this combo unit that research on the Web has shown me is the typical major problem. Do yourself a favor, save a little money, aggravation and disappointment and stay clear of these Panasonic machines because it's obvious these are still evolving and can't live up to the promise. That turned into the machine unable to read, play or edit any other disc too. For the money you're spending and the usage you're probbaly expecting from this machine, it's too risky. Simpy put, the potential for this machine is fantastic.
That's the kiss of death for this thing when you see the little dvd symbol in the display but there's nothing in it. The first machine broke down after eight months, this new one was bought at Target five months ago. Ridiculous. Now, it's twice in one year. It's a bad investment. The vhs player and tuner are fine.
After the machine cleared the contents, it freaked out, made lots of noises and then started telling "No Read" on the display. Both times the display on the machines told me I had a dvd in the player but in both cases the dvd player was empty. This machine (and the previous combo unit I bought but it was a different model) are just way way too delicate and not properly made. These dvd-vhs combo units are obviously going to be used a lot and many people are going to try to transfer vhs tapes to dvds too. The first time I gave them break thinking stuff happens. This time, I went and put a previously recorded RW-format disc into the machine and decided to clear the contents so I could reuse the disc and record something new on it.
It has many great features, is fairly easy to use once you get used to it and offers numerous conveniences and thoughtful features. Two out of two times my dvd player broke down. Now, if only the thing worked for more than a few months and wasn't so easy to break down, freeze up or just stop working. Yet, the machines are simply not made well for lots of playing/recording. I was a pretty loyal purchaser of their equipment but I am so disapointed with this machine and the fact it is the SECOND Panasonic dvd/vhs combo unit I bought to break down in just over a year that I am giving up on them. .
These are lemons Panasonic is putting out on the market and dissatisfied customers are growing. I am done with Panasonic. Both times the optical laser pickup along with the spindel/drive were faulty. So now I have an expensive vhs player with a dvd drivd that can't do ANYTHING.
This machine is excellent and does everything for you.
We had a separate VCR and Panasonic Hard Drive DVD player that we love for storing movies without disks.
This is a must for anyone.
Since our Panasonic Hard Drive DVD recorder is a gem, we chose the latest Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder.
It has more bells and whistles than we will use, but we have the capability to add home movies, and pictures if needed.
We have an extensive VHS and DVD movie collection and we also record movies/tv shows off the air.
But the best part is that we can enjoy our movie collection no matter what format.
Unfortunately, the death of analog television meant we had to change.
Thanks again Panasonic and I hope you place a hard drive in the future model.
