Panasonic RP-HC500 Noise-Canceling Headphones
Whether used to block out sound while on an aircraft or to create a tranquil environment so you can enjoy your favorite CD track, these new headphones are up to the challenge. The new RP-HC500 noise canceling headphones are designed to reduce background noise by creating out-of-phase sounds that equal the background noise to effectively cancel it. Additionally, the headphones reduce low frequencies such as the drone of a plane's engine or a loud air conditioning unit. The noise-canceling feature can also be switched off to allow the user to converse or to reduce background noise by virtue of the headphone's comfortable insulated housing. Panasonic RP-HC500 Noise-Canceling Headphones Reviews
I bought these headphones after spending $350 for the Bose (for my wife) and reading David Pogue's 7/14/2007 comparison of eight Bose competitors. Haven't figured out a way to loosen the fit and probably never will since my wife now prefers the Panasonic to the Bose. I have no regrets - as Pogue wrote: "You get quality that's nearly indistinguishable from the Boses for a third the price." In fact, to my ear, the sound IS indistinguishable. The only quibble I have is that the tension of the headband is too tight because after extended listening I developed some mild soreness around my ears from the pressure.
They do not meaningfully reduce spoken sounds so a noisy seat mate on an airplane will be just as obtrusive. Just purchased these earphones and while they work very well for the type of noise I need to reduce (e.g. They are quite uncomfortable for my ears which are about average size. riding lawnmower, air compressor), the ear pads are for small ears.
Overall, I think the price I paid ( I sit in my cubicle under the air conditioner which is roaring pretty good and with the music playing cannot hear the air conditioning at all. The way I understand it, the microphone takes the sound and then applies an opposite soundwave to the sample to cancel out the ambient noises. I have to wiggle the headphones to get them off my ear lobes. I just received these today and I think they sound pretty darn good. When I do that my left hand touches near the noice cancellation microphone.
The circumaural earcups are a little small and I have medium to small sized ears. Though in normal usage, I doubt I will hear it much. Without music, I hear a faint hissing sound. So when I interfere with that, it squeaks in a quite annoying way.
The sound quality is as good as I can ask for, and the price was right. Altogether a good buy. The ear cups are a little small for my big ears, but they are still comfortable and the noise canceling works well.
Similar style and performance to a Bose set I used to have, all at a fraction of the cost. Great headphones.
