I already own the 5960 so I upgraded to this one becuase the USB is high speed. I was shocked at how muffled the audio was compared to the 5960. The improved speed with the USB port was great, I was able to connect my external hard drive. I was impressed with the picture quality but audio quality was a downgrade. The remote is a slight improvement, it will only control TV's made by Philips though. Some.avi files I played had distorted audio and clipping. This would be a great player if the audio wasn't bad.
This is my 3rd Philip All Region player and it works well. My first older Philips DVD player was wonderful and then I upgraded and although the player did play all region of DVDs it was really slow to turn on, to get the tray out and when using the remote the response was terrible. Works Great. After using the settings outlined on other posts in order to make these Philip players All Region (Region 0) I was able to play both my American and Japanese DVDs, no problem. Picture is good, and the speed and response of the unit is much better than many of the Philip players. Very pleased. This player is more like my first Philips and the response times are much faster.

Con: Only 90 days warranty (took 1 star off for this), only coaxial output. Given the price to feature ratio, it is good provided it will last. Pro: Price, can preview each title on the disc even those homemade discs with barebone title menu, region free (just look it up on google for the hack), good upconverting ability. I bought this yesterday.
The picture is very crisp through my HDTV with an HDMI cable. It has manage to become not only an upconverting DVD player, but an all out media center. First day I got it I plugged my WD Passport 160GB and it worked instantly. I received the Philips DVP5990 as a gift and can say I am nothing but impressed with the capabilities. The standard DVDs I have played look awesome and I haven't had any problems.
