Philips HTS3555 Home Theater System with iPod Connectivity (Black) Reviews
In short, if you are in the market for a simple, economic upgrade to your sound this is the product for you. You won't find a better deal with all the features of this product. As others have said, the only draw back to the system is the fact that the speaker wires are hard wired into the back of the speakers. Ipod dock (controllable with remote). Speakers are hard wired. All-in-all works very well. DVD Trey is a little flimsy. Plenty of inputs and easy to connect.
I've owned it for about a month now and I don't regret the purchase at all.
-Price. Pros:.
-Features. 1000 watts of power (loud enough to annoy the neighbors).
After much research I decided to go with this system mainly because I felt it had the most features for the smallest price. But that didn't really present a problem for me because there was plenty of wire to accommodate my small living room.
Cons:.
My review is based on that price. One con and a lost star has to do with switching between modes - it takes too long. Make sure the DVD player is not playing when you want to set the speaker volume. The remote is fairly intuitive, as is most of the internal set-up. This is a fantastic unit.
Crisp and clear for movies, but really cooks for those dramatic scores and screeching action (X-Men movies look and sound great)., the bass provides a little thunder (but will not really thump - its passive, so your room will not rattle) and it maintains integrity loud. As noted, it takes annoyingly long for the DVD tray to open, but besides that, this system is great and a great value in a box. Even my arrested developement DVDs look and sound great. I bought this for $130 manufacturer re-certified off ebay. I had it pumping after about 45 minutes of set-up, including wall mounting the two satellites.
The Ipod dock is awesome and you can control your ipod from across the room with the remote - very useful for skipping songs or changing playlists. (Turn up the rear speakers for a better surround experience). I have it at about half power, and that rocks my socks off. It is extremely easy to set-up. At first, you end up hitting buttons twice and turning things off you meant to turn on - but all in all, i love this system and can't stop watching things in surround sound. And you can hook it up to hidef cable and all your shows are surround sound. The sound is excellent.
The upconversion makes a little difference, but most new Hidef tvs already internally upconvert, so it doesn't blow your mind.
The price is right. Anyway I mainly use it to watch DVDs and haven't tried the Ipod feature but to watch DVDs & to listen to music it's great. It's kind of annoying switching from radio to disc w/o a remote (it was a lot easier to switch back & forth on my old boombox) but w a remote you are fine. I did have to buy an extra cord. The sound is great. I recommend buying this. I forgot what that cord is called but it's the one with red, white, and yellow connectors on each end. It was fairly easy to install.
For the price, you can't beat it. This thing puts out amazing power, I can use it as an iPod player, as a radio, and so much more. I had an iHome that died and I wanted something else to play my iPod on and listen to the radio with. As others have mentioned, it is hard to upgrade or change the length of the wires, but that is the only downside to it. An exact replacement iHome was $100, but I got lucky and I stumbled upon this. I received this home theater system for my birthday last September, and let me say, it is the best present that I have ever dropped a hint for. The DVD player makes standard definition DVDs look a little better than my old dvd player as well.
I give 2 stars instead of 1 because for the relatively low price of this unit, it does sound much better than the stock sound from my new plasma TV. If you do not return the original unit within 20 days you are charged for the unit. Instead, I would like to expound upon the return processes for the patience impaired people like me. Other reviews adequately cover the quality of the product. The original unit had an identical problem as another reviewer. Strike 3. I call Philips to get another label issued this evening (May 1, 2008). Strike 6.
A call to Philips instantly issued an RMA and the next unit was here about April 28. Strike 5 for the wrong label. Strike 1. After researching a few systems for my first home audio purchase, I decided on this model. I call Fedex to pick up the unit and am informed that the return label supplied to me is only good for the shipment, not the pick up. I'm not sure if this is TiVo's fault, DirecTV's, and/or Philips'.
Strike 2 for the defective new product, but kudos to the fast replacement. While I'm on a roll, my TiVo remote will not control this unit. The replacement unit had frequent digital sound dropouts for a few seconds every so often. Another call to tech support suggested I reboot all of my equipment and secondly perform a firmware update. Arrived within one or two days of actually being picked up for delivery, but zero tracking for the first 5 weeks after order submission. The returns department is only available 9-6 EST and they are closed, call back tomorrow. As I was currently recording a program, I opted for the firmware update, which did fix the problem.
I'm not sure which company actually fulfilled the order, but the unit did not arrive until April 21 or 22, 2008. The disc drive would not recognize any discs. Strike 4 for the faulty refurb unit. But Strike 7 for one of them since I'm not particularly interested in purchasing a universal remote. The replacement unit is not new product but from some repair refurb factory. I placed my order on March 19, 2008.
