Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current. The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. Seagate ST310005FPA1E3-RK Freeagent Pro 1 TB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0/FireWire 400 External Hard Drive Reviews
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY TWO 80GB external hard drives and make two backups of your data and keep in separate places- learn from our mistake. We even sent to a super expensive (estimate of $3,000) data recovery place and they couldnt even get it back for us. It is easily knocked over based on its design, and they dont tell you in the literature that your data will then be unrecoverable. So you'll get a new seagate if still under warranty, but your data is toast. Their customer service is also unreliable in their answers. This is an attractive drive that works great.that is until it gets knocked over.
These type of files take alot of space so 1TB may not last too long. Speed seems adequate but is more or less transparent after the initial copy because all backup operations are fully automatic.
I keep up to two copies of changes but if you desire, that can be increased. I highly recommend this drive.
The backup software is configured to automatically backup multiple locations where it automatically moves a copy when new files are added or a change is made to an existing file.
I use it exclusively as a backup disk for HD video and RAW format digital pictures (25,000+). The Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB unit was delivered before expected and performs as advertised using Firewire in a 3 unit daisy chain configuration.
By the way, if you make adjustments to a RAW file, this counts as a change. The backup software that comes with the unit, Memeo AutoBackup, performs perfectly for the described configuration.
I bought this device to back up my growing media collection, and the 1 TB capacity and FireWire 400 capability add to the attractiveness of this solution. The richly featured backup software included with the product bombs on 64-bit Vista, and Seagate support confirms this as a problem with no current workaround. Too bad, but I'll manage without - will look for a freeware solution soon. Backups (unfortunately via the awful Windows Backup) are fast enough, and restores were expedient and complete.
I've had the drive for 2 months, seems quiet, efficient and unobtrusive. So far, I recommend. Purchased the drive b/c of Seagate's leading reputation after dealing with severe heartbreak after the failure of 2 Western Digital My Book's. I bought this drive to house a very large music collection (AIFF files).
All around this is an awesome external drive that you can use to perform real-time backups, scheduled backups, or even store your music and movie collection. One drawback I ran into was difficulty in using certian (will not name) wipe software to completely remove all data. Additionally it is nearly physically tamper proof - you will destroy the housing if you attempt entry (we tried). This could have been due to a compatability problem with external drives or a problem performing the wipes over the interface i was using (USB instead of firewire or ESATA). I am very satisfied. This drive performs very well, it's fast, doesn't overload YOU with required software (interfacing software is optional), and a well planned physical footprint have made this my new favorite.
