Seagate ST307504FPA1E3-RK FreeAgent Pro 750 GB USB/eSATA/FireWire400 External Hard Drive Reviews
All kinds of screwy things happen. BEWARE MAC USERS. It disappears from my desktop and then needs Disk Utility repair when I mount it. That's why I bought this, but I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Seagate & at Apple discussion forum over weeks and months. I've even gotten a replacement from seagate. I've got 2 other FreeAgent drives, both 320GB and they are great. Folders & files disappear & reappear.
Setup is a snap just plug in the drive, connect the eSATA cable to the drive and then your HR20, then turn on the HR20 and presto almost triple the recording capacity. And I've even had a couple power failures, and everything's come back and rebooted on its own with no lost recordings or glitches. I bought this drive for my DirecTV HR20 to extend its recording capability from 50hrs to almost 150hrs and the drive has been on continuously for 1 year without issue. So think about it, that's 24/7/365 that my drive has been running and recording straight and it's never failed me once.
It's been nice to not have to worry about how many DVR recordings I have saved. And if you're wanting this for your computer, I think it's a pretty safe bet there too since few computers would come close to the same demand as 24/7 DVR recording. Since the HR20 always has a live buffer recording regardless of if the receiver is on or off, the hard drive never turns off and is always recording video data. I'd say that's pretty rock solid. This is a great drive.
Bottom line go for it. So I have to say, I'm more than happy with the purchase.
I got it for a good price, it did well for about 6 months and now my computer will not recognize it. Light is still on (it is always on), but nothing happens. This is in rotation for the military. I have about 400GB vested in this thing. Once plugged in, the folders will start disapearing and then.nothing. Cant open, exchange or delet.
I wouldn't have bought this drive if I had put my hands on it first. I bought it online based on the misconception that Seagate wouldn't permit their brand on products like these. The orange stripe you're seeing in the picture is a light that cannot be turned off. Do not buy this hard drive if the power cord will be in the vicinity of moving things. 1. The drive's center of gravity is high and its base is narrow. My drive died.
The power sensor (it's not a button) is an inferior original design that essentializes this drive's fundamental problem: practical considerations were sacrificed to marketing considerationthe drive was designed primarily to have good numbers on paper and look cool when viewed online. 2. Do not buy this hard drive if you're going to be placing it around where living things move.
3. It is the worst drive I've ever owned. 4.
Do not buy this drive if you'll be storing valuable data on it (fortunately I wasn't). Do not buy this hard drive if you're going to be putting it in your bedroom or other location where you don't want a permanent orange glow. It is about as easy to topple as an unopened beer bottle.
5. The power connector fits only loosely.
when you turn it on the light fades on after about a second, and when you turn it off you have to hold the button for a few seconds before it fades out. 4 stars instead of 5. It's not intuitive and there's no feedback, so you are always guessing if it's working or not. hooked up easily to my mac via firewire. I think I can hear it going to sleep when the mac goes to sleep- but that's only at night. I run it once a day or so to let time capsule back it up. 2 months, so far so good. seems to run pretty cool if I leave it on 24hrs, although I don't like having it run constantly, I feel like it's less likely to get corrupted/power surge/ etc.
I can see where a lot of uninfomed users would think that it's defective. My only beef is the touch sensitive power button. not much to say, hopefully a backup drive doesn't get much attention. who knows how long it will last. 5 yr warranty hopefully worth something. seems to be fast enough, I don't use it for anything else. Maybe I should just leave it on.
