Sleep Soundly
One of the fundamental criticisms of New Age music is that it puts people to sleep. Here, Steven Halpern, one of the founding fathers of New Age, makes that his mission and, as you might expect, does an effective job of it. Drawing on catalog material from the early 1980s, Halpern builds an attractive collection of delicate, lighter-than-air sonic textures that nicely serves the intended purpose--to fill the silence with something prettier than white noise. Halpern does so by blending electric and acoustic piano, plus additional keyboards, to create soothing, improvisational, cloudlike musical abstractions that often convey the tranquil randomness of wind chimes in a soft breeze. The liner notes also promise your subconscious will be exposed to a series of subliminal, sleep-encouraging affirmations along the quiet, unstructured way. This may sound like so much frou-frou to the unconverted, but for anyone sincerely interested in a sleep aid, Halpern's disc is a certified snoozer, a New Age music box. Other New Age discs may accomplish the same purpose as Sleep Soundly, but few will do it as persuasively. --Terry Wood

I got this album because I wanted something soothing to fall asleep to - this mission was accomplished, as the music is quite soothing. I also don't subscribe to the "energy" bs that a lot of the reviewers claim to feel when listening to it. Warning: I do not fit in with the "new age" hippie folk who bought and reviewed this album. Feeling "energy" from the music is just a snobby way of saying they liked it.
But, I have listened to several Halpern records and I must say, for how many albums this guy puts out, a lot of them sound the same. It sounded good and made you feel better. ok.
It did not heal you, it did not purify your soul. Yes, the genre lends itself to repetition, which is part of the soothing aspect he is going for, but cmon.
This was the only CD I could sleep through the night with.
It may not work for everyone, but it definitely worked for me.
A lot of them had lovely music, some had delta and theta wave-stimulating tones underneath.
I kept it on "Repeat" and listened to it every night for several months until my sleep patterns were restored.
but almost all of them had annoying variances in tone/volume.
I tried many CDs as I weaned myself off of sleep aids during a very difficult year.
Later, I used it with my colicky baby, and have since given several copies to friends to try.
Music would crescendo and pull me back out of the dream-state I had just finally entered.
But for me, most of the music was a little like being trapped in a slow-moving elevator, and I couldn't wait to get off. It just didn't touch me or reach me at a level deep enough to relax me or put me to sleep. There were a few cuts on this CD that I liked well enough. I guess I found the music rather shallow.
This CD really relaxes you and makes you go to sleep fast.I highly recommend it.
The first night I listened to it, I did fall asleep and slept for a record 6 hours straight. I have gone back to one of my many meditation/guided imagery CDs.
I read the reviews of this CD on Amazon and decided that it sounded pretty good. And this time I could not get back to sleep.I stayed awake, feeling jittery.wired.
I purchased this CD for the same reason that most do.insomnia. Again, I fell asleep, but woke up with nightmares.
I thought it might be coincidence, so I listened the next night. I do not want to depend on pills or artificial means to sleep.
But then the next night I fell asleep and woke up terrified by gruesome dreams. I know they are safe.
