I have already purchased two of them and will likely buy one more very soon to replace a factory-installed CD drive in my Gateway PC. This drive is easy to install and flexible to use. Great Sony quality.
After less than 3 years it stopped working entirely. This Sony installed easily and so far works fine (I've only had it for a month). My only gripe is that the write up said it came with both a black face and a beige face, but mine only has a beige face (and my Dell is black). The Samsung that came with my Dell started giving me trouble about a year after I bought the PC. This cosmetic issue doesn't really bother me, but I can't give it 5 stars for this.
I bought this and obviously from my title it came pretty fast and it works great, easy installation did it on my own so you probably can too.
I've had a DVD drive for 8 years, and it has been having difficulty reading some minor-scratched DVDs, which include some newly purchased ones. No software needed unless you want to burn CDs. I am able to play almost all of those minor-scratched DVDs now, excepting only a couple. So that bothered me a lot. The actual DVD players that cannot be hooked to a computer can play those scratched DVDs OK, probably because those have a lot higher error tolerance. This SONY drive takes care "some" of that problem for me. Reading speed was great, setup was simply plug-and-play.
If you dont want a DVD burner, this is the drive to get. Amazon has best price on the web (retail version) Good software, easy install and changing enclosed black faceplate a snap. writes and reads CDs and reads DVDs.
