Small enough to keep with you at all times and ideal for achieving peace and quiet in planes, trains, buses, and cars, Sony's MDR-NC6 noise-canceling over-ear headphones reduce perceived outside noise by more than 70 percent (up to 10 dB at 300 Hz) so you can hear musical nuances against a quieter background. The headphones' noise-canceling circuit senses outside noise using tiny, built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headphone drivers, effectively blocking solid-state (continuous) noise from 40 to 1,500 Hz. It's especially effective on noises like air-conditioning systems, freeway rumble, and airplane engines (from a passenger's perspective). The switchable noise-canceling circuitry runs for approximately 30 hours on a single AAA alkaline battery. When noise canceling is off, the headphones continue to function for standard music listening (and with slightly better sound quality). The headphones' neodymium-magnet diaphragms deliver powerful sound. I have to be careful when I put them on, because I can't hear anyone in the house trying to talk to me. The headsets were received in just a few days, and they work great.
I have found that using the headphones with the NR feature off is a little more comfortable for me but the headphones do tend to push hard against your head getting very uncomfortable for long play listening. Bought these headphones about 3 weeks ago and have found that I can only wear them for about 15-20 minutes max. They do produce a nice sound if you can overlook these two things. The NR feature has a high pitch tone that drives me nuts when there is no music playing. When music is playing I can tolerate it for a little while.
This product cancels noise great and allows both my boyfriend and I to enjoy two different listening situations without interfering with each other. They are heartier than others I have purchased in the past.
I wish description indicated type of headphone covers. I couldn't figure out how to request price match refund from Amazon. Headphone covers are fragile foams. If Amazon indeed has this option, it must be well hidden somewhere. With $35 price tag, I was expecting more durable and easy to clean vinyl covers. Two weeks after purchase, Target offered same item at $29.
The headphones do a great job suppressing most of the engine noise when I fly commercial.
