With a five-CD/dual-deck capacity and 4x dubbing speed, the Sony RCD-W500C does much more than merely play your favorite CDs--it lets you mix and burn your own. The device records on both CD-R and CD-RW formats, and is compatible with CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 playback. To improve the recording quality, the RCD-W500C uses Super Bit Mapping technology to reduce low-level noise in the background, and High Speed Finalizing to prepare your recorded CDs for playback. You can also enter your own title and track information using the CD text entry feature. Sony packs in such additional features as 24-step program play, two-mode repeat play (track/disc), one-touch synchro-start recording (which minimizes the awkward gap between songs on recorded discs), and a full-featured remote control. The unit also delivers a 24-bit analog-to-digital/digital-to-analog converter, plus a headphone jack with a separate volume control for listening in private. The company ensures that its listeners receive the best possible sound by using gold-plated audio terminals for its digital input and output (optical) and analog input and output (RCA type) outlets. The RCD-W500C carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. What's in the Box RCD-W500C CD player and recorder, Remote Commander remote control, two RCA audio cables, two AA batteries, and user's manual.

Sony RCDW500C Compact Disc Player / Recorder Reviews
So before you start read it over and over. I am able to record from CD to CD even thou I have not figure out how to adjust the volume while recording from CD to CD, and from Tape to CD which I can control the volume when recording from Tape to CD. I agree with everybody else on the instruction book that it's really confusing. On the Sony RCD-W500C/W100 I bought one about a month ago and have been pleased with it. I eventually will figure out how to set the volume when recording from CD to CD but I hate to mess with what I am able to do now considering all the bad feedback on this recorder.
The only thing I do not like is when nothing is happening it stops recording or creates lots of tracks, I now control that through the pause button. When you are recording live the make next track function is very useful to create breaks for the next song. It took a little bit to get through the instruction book, but once I mastered it, it has all of the functions I need. This player recorder is really good, I use it every week at our church to record our praise service. We now have two, one for each sanctuary.
Also, I found the directions on how to connect a turntable or other outside element to the RCDW500C to be lacking and I had a little trouble doing that. They insisted that what I wanted was a burner for my computer or something to hook up to my iPod. Once you get the basics down, this recorder is fairly easy to use.
Unfortunately, I hadn't tried to make any CDs in a while so I'd forgotten some of the basics, and I have to agree with many of the people who have already mentioned that the manual is poorly and confusingly written. Just incidentally, I initially inquired at both Best Buy and Target about CD recorders, and the 20something clerks had no idea what I was talking about. Otherwise, it has performed well and I have made several fun compilation CDs so far.
I bought the RCDW500C because I figured it would be similar, which it is, except for having more drawers. I'm not sure they knew what stereo components are, let alone a turntable. There are a few other minor differences, but it essentially works the same.
I previously owned a Sony CD recorder with which I was very happy, but it was damaged in a move from one state to another.
i hate mini disc and by the way people this is not from sony's quality days sony hasnt been good since 2002 get an old sony cassette deck for recording thats top notch it will work ten times better then this i guarentee i gave this a try and sent it back it wouldnt work for me at all.
Transfers old cassette tapes to CD's. The hardware/software will not recognize the CD's as a CD. One drawback seems to be with my DELL computer furnished hardware/software. My older computer, with NERO software, does recognize the CD as an audio CD and allows me to create another CD that is recognized by the new DELL computer. 'R' CD's won't work.
The CD's created on the machine will play on other players. However, the 'R' CD's work fine with the NERO software. Machine does what I wanted. The other drawback is that one has to purchase "music cd's" in order to record on the machine.
