Sony RDR-VX500 DVD Player/Recorder with VCR

The RDR-VX500 is the perfect combination for your home theater. This DVD/VCR player has DVD+RW/+R, DVD-RW/-R recording compatibility and one button dubbing from VCR to DVD or DVD to VCR. With i.LINK Interface for DV/Digital8 Camcorders, Progressive Scan Technology Output for DVD at 480P and VCR Plus+ Timer Recording, the RDR-VX500 combines convenience and advance functionality for your viewing pleasure.

Now you can make digital archives of your favorite VHS tapes and copy your homemade DVDs to share with friends and family on VHS. Sony's RDR-VX500 DVD recorder/VCR combo saves space while simplifying component hookups. Offering broad format flexibility through DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW versatility, the deck permits dubbing from VHS to DVD and from DVD to VHS (subject to Macrovision anti-piracy technology in the source media).

In addition, the recorder sports a handy i.Link digital-video interface so you can copy DV/Digital8 camcorder tapes directly to long-lasting recordable DVDs. Other features include progressive-scan output for DVD (480p) for high-quality video reproduction on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, JPEG digital image and MP3 music playback from CD-R/CD-RW, and VCR Plus+ programming for easy navigation and control.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

This feature also has allowed this deck, now that it has been retired, to be easily used by family members who aren't so tech-savvy (both DVD and VHS play from the same Component-Out, so there's no need to change inputs on the monitor). The main thing about this burner that distinguished it from the others was the ability to play VHS from the Component outputs. The 8x disk limit is a major sore spot for me, as well as the poor dependability of burned DVDs in general. Other than that, I have to agree with many of the others here. That feature is very handy for a pro-editor, like me, who wants to get the best image possible from the inferior VHS format.

I used the warranty and sent it in to be fixed. This dvd recorder/ vcr combo is out.

It made loud clunky noises during finalization, and then about half the time lost the data. Note I gave it two stars because the dvd player and vcr player work.

I've had it.

A couple months later, the recorder was unreliable again. Now the warranty is expired, and I just lost all the data of a program I spent 3 hours recording (and won't be airing again).

I have been having trouble with the dvd recorder aspect since the first year I bought it.

picture - because of that idiotic macrovision chip technology. their DVD records refuse to record a sat. They refuse to record. AVOID ALL SONY RECORDERS.

Does not read all dvd's. They make walkmans, TV's and a lot of other things. The problems I have experienced are,. The Player will not finalize the dvd. 1). 2).

Take Sony. WRONG. Having purchased Sony products before, I didn't have to many reservations about this DVD-recorder. 3). I have had nothing but unsatisfactory service with this item. After all, it's a Sony, right. I should have waited until "ALL" the "BUGS" were fixed, or at least reduced. Takes a long time to "Process".

You know how some companies do a lot of things. Anyway, to make a long story short, BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. I mean, isn't this one supposed to be compatable with just about everything. Can I give it a ZERO.

Very crisp resolution. Using an cam tape adaptor, you simply put that in the vcr, push one button and it dubs to DVD. It doesn't get easier than that.

As far as the transfer, there is no drop out in quality of pic or sound. This was recommended by a friend, and I was able to pick up one used on the cheap.

You can also i.Link direct from the front face plate to record DVD's or vcr tapes. If you're like me, I had a huge pile of camcorder tapes I wanted to copy to an easier format. Sony's never break.

My house is full of their products, and this new one is a great addition.
