The VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins so you can easily scan back to the start of a recording using these signals as a reference. Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for some TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use two inputs, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats. However, there's a good (sort of) ending to the story. I have happy thoughts of the confrontation between the thieves and any receiver of the stolen goods. Among the stolen items was the Sony SLV-D300P. Like so many others have reported, the DVD is garbage. We took our RV to the dealership for some warranty work, and while there our rig and several others was/were broken into by thieves. It came installed with a Sony Wega TV in our fifth-wheel travel trailer, and played perhaps 5 DVD films before crapping out. Pawn shop owners aren't generally know to be especially nice people :-) All we got after that was something like "Initializing" on a blank screen, and nothing else.
1) Press the button to open the tray. 2) Place DVD disc upside down & press play. You should be able to access the menu and make any changes to sound or language (I am able).
5) Press play and it should play shortly thereafter. 3) Wait a minute or two, until the ERROR sign pops up. Please pass it on if it does, and if it doesn't, then don't.
=) 4) Open the tray and this time place the disc right-side up. I dunno why I tried this, but one day I did, and it has worked every single time I have attempted to play a DVD; whereas before, it wouldn't despite numerous tries with the same disc.
It's annoying, but at least the player is operable. I hope this works for you, as it does for me.
I should've read all of the reviews as well before making a purchase. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this unit. I've grown up on Sony products and I am disappointed that they produced such a poor quality product at such a high price. The product was GRRRRRREAT when I first purchased it a year ago.Now, I will not play ANY CD OR DVD. I've even used discs right out of the package.
until now. It seems every dvd you put into the unit freezes and stops. The sound also cuts out. The dvd had zero issues. My belief is after having some success with this unit and comparing that to the reviews here is that you should not take a chance on buying it. My dvd/vcr worked flawlessly for almost 3 years. Just not worth the gamble for the price. Here is a good one.
I bought this unit a few years back and now am in the market for a DVD Read/write combo unit, so I decided to see how well I did before when purchasing this unit. I can say that all of the negative reviews are correct.
I have been one of the lucky ones, but now it seems that poor quality has finally caught up to me. After reading most of the reviews, it is apparent to me that you can either get 1 of 3 units when you purchase.
I have seen pixelation, freezes, not all DVD's can be read (store-bought ones) and now recently grey and white static screens occuring from time to time during viewing. Do yourself a favor and pass this one, because it will fail on you someday, and once it does, it seems to get worse fast.
2 reccomended units would be Panasonic and OPPO. A piece of junk, and unreliable problematic one, or one that just hasn't shown any issues yet.
