Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner Reviews
1)The internal irregular noise can be heard when no FM signal channel and weak analogue signal channel. Due to sporadic E layer, plenty of FM stations, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Phlippines, can be heard in Japan. Perhape, this noise oriented in analogue FM decording. 4)When AC plug off from concent, the preset channels are none. I noticed that some weak points as follows;. When weak signal listening, very useful the switch for stereo/mono change.
3)Japanese FM Band 76-88MHz CANNOT be heard this tuner, then this tuner is the clock mode use only. This noise can not be heard when fair or good FM signal strength. I use this tuner in Japan as analogue FM, because the selectivity to 100kHz adjacent channel is very good. Perhaps, the internal irregular noise does not occured on mono mode. 2)There is no switch for stereo/mono change.
But if use conventional tuners or scanners, interference with 100kHz adjacent channels is occured.
Some nits: why doesn't the clock time get set automatically from the air. Perhaps it *could* be CD quality, but broadcasters are not sending that quality of sound (similar to the situation with HDTV, where the potential is there, but most of the content is mediocre - Seinfeld reruns at 720p. But I've found that while, yes, there's no static and very little hiss, the audio is hardly "CD quality" - virtually indistinguishable from ordinary analog FM. Aside from that, this tuner does an adequate job and doesn't look bad. You get what you pay for, approximately. But satellite stations tend to play long loops (e.g., 24hrs) where you hear the same stuff over and over again (and for $13/month). And where are the EPGs like one day may be there on broadcast digital TV. This is what bleeding edge is all about.
This is more a criticism of HD Radio in general, as this tuner manages to receive stations well at my location with the included simple wire dipole antenna. Here in the SF Bay area, there are probably over a dozen HD stations in addition to analog FM, but I can't honestly say that the wider selection is a big improvement, certainly not to compare with satellite radio. give me a break). So between satellite, HD, and analog FM, there's no clear winner. I tried the AM tuner, and that works fairly well, and HD AM is noticeably better than analog AM, but there still isn't much I prefer to listen on AM, HD or otherwise.
FM Rating: From West Michigan, filled every HD memory spot from the Chicago Market, distance: 110 miles. The signal rejection is very good from nearby 10khz strong transmitters. Noise HD, Excellent, and voice is raspy at times but Analog FM Excellent. Move on and find another DX station.
If you are a DXer it's great. Down fall #2. Volume gain control could be improved on weak signal. Daytime: With longwire antenna, or CC Crane "AM JUSTICE" loop, you will be very pleased.
Antenna Used for AM: End Fed Longwire, transformer coupled. Sensitivity Very Good. The only pitfall here is that there's no switch to kill the HD when switching from Analog mode into HD. Have fun,. RDS feature is excellent, with plenty of information scroll, and very fast aquistion time. Have fun,. Filled 10 HD stations from Grand Rapids, MI and Chicago markets. After a long wait, I finally had the oportunity to test this unit out.
Night time reception is very good, as HD is pretty much impossible unless you are next to the transmitter. Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner Review. Capture ratio, VERY GOOD. I am. Audio not stable after signal falls off. Down fall: Not enough memory channels. It gives you the callsign information immediately, and you can skip the audio quality, etc. The "highs" in the audio are abit strange, and you are caught off guard a bit when it switches from analog to HD format.
It's cheap, runs hot, and lacks a battery to store memories, but, heck.it's CHEAP. AM HD. Antenna Used for FM: APS-13 w/o preamp 60 feet elevation. Zero bars on three bar signal scale will be audible. Signal rejection from adjacent channels Very Good.
This tuner was purchased for my husband so that he could listen to HD FM radio music and he is more pleased than he thought he would be. It works very well with wonderful quality sound.
This receiver has an incredible tuner, especially by today's standards, when it comes to DX'ing AM or FM. You will not be disappointed. Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner clearly exceeded my expectations. This receiver was able to pick up several long distant stations, and picked up a few more HD signals than my other unit.
