Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 Reviews
I don't blame Creative for lack of support on this card I blame Microsoft. If I were building a newer machine I would go with a newer card like the Audigy 2. They should do a better job in supporting popular hardware. I as many before me and many after me have had or will have issues with updating to newer versions of Windows. Which really hurts the value of this card. I have been running this card for a year now and I have had no problems.
It runs on Windows 98 both editions, ME and XP (i'm using the home edition). If you update to XP you will need to download updated drivers. 4 stars for nothing is perfect. The one thing I do hate is the software it is all bundled under one package, but when you need to update you have to do so in parts. XP users make sure the card you buy is compatible with your operating system. There is no one time downloadable update that fixes every issue with XP. When I downloaded the newest drivers I had no problems.
Creative labs has average tech support it could be better.
I have tried all the new drivers from the Creative Lab, it finally let it deliver the sound to the 5.1 chanel. Have to turn off the digital mode to heard the sound and only analog mode allowed. I also found this card wont work with VIA chipset that most of AMD computers. Sound quality is kind of poor proabaly due to the driver. Also found mnay users have the same problems on the web.
Itsignificantly slowed down the performance of my computer, and wont work with the new MS media player 9. I have many problems with the driver for my XP. After uninstall this product, it crash my system, my computer keeping rebooting. Keep away from this card if you are using XP. it turn out that I have to reformat C: to restore my system.
(my spec:Sony VAIO RX650, P4-1.6A 512DDR).
A genius (which my speakers are) or a creative card (maybe a sound blaster live). I have genius 5.1 speakers and i want to bye a sound card 5.1 of high qualite sounds, which card i should bye.
A Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is a much better choice for a lot less money and it actually works as advertised. I suppose this is supposed to be a very good sound card, but it seems that the only operating system that it fully supports is Windows 98. Of course, there are no products in the Creative line which say that they support Windows XP, even though they do have some drivers out which kinda work on occasion. Many of the options are not available if you are running Windows 2000 and Windows XP is particularly problematic. I unforturnately was running Windows 2000 when I purchased this card and it was severely limited in what it would do due to the limitations of the operating system according to Creative.
All in all great card. I have a dual boot system. I installed this sound card without a problem and as usual always download the latest drivers from creative. Remote works great and so do the optical outputs on the Live Drive. Worked without a problem on Win 98 SE and Win 2000.
