If you're an indie music snob, get lost, and if you're a pop sensation evangelist, get lost, this album isn't for you. Forget the awards and the pop scene hype, this is what Armstrong, Dirnt, Cool, White, Freese and Preston are all about, profound yet everyday music that isn't pretentious.God Bless Rock and Roll.
Ironically, I find that "American Idiot" and similar songs are quite popular with the US Military despite the `anti-American' message. Initially, I was impressed, but I criticized the lead singer for "sounding too much like Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day." Imagine my surprise when I learned that Foxboro Hottubs was in fact the same band members as Green Day. Foxboro Hottubs, likewise, is quintessentially American, the message is "We are here, we don't care what you think, We're here to live.".
I think this album is about having fun and being true to yourself, Hollywood be damned. I bought the album purely out of an interest for the art direction and an intense desire to hear something not in the mainstream. I "discovered" Foxboro Hottubs in the bargain bin at a Base Exchange in Balad Air Base in Iraq.
I especially think the drumming sounds exceptional. I think the best part of this project though is the packaging. This is not another album of cover songs, but instead we get Green Day original songs in the style of songs they would cover. It resembles a vinyl album from the 60's. To me, that is extremely unique. Very cool idea indeed.
Other albums I bought that sound like this are: Sloopjohnd , Acid Eaters and Roll On Unlike American idiot, there are no deep meanings to these songs other than to just have fun listening to them. What a cool idea for Green Day to have as a way for their fans to appreciate their influences. Tre Cool has certainly risen above the call of duty here.
Fans will want it for their collection. Real Green Day fans (you know who you are) should like this little excursion, while we wait for the follow up to American Idiot. Nothing ground breaking here, but a nice collection of Green Day material. THAT is the album everyone is waiting for.
the only problem i had was that because the carboard cd case wasnt wrapped in plastic or some other protective covering, the heat made the packaging stick to the cardboard, tearing it upon opening the disk itself wasnt scratched, it was actually in great condition.
BUT. Who'd a thunk. And, yeah know what, it's pretty darn good. So there is this "new" band that put out an album with an oh so familiar voice. Get busy boys, your fans are waiting. This still doesn't take the pressure off the boys to produce another authentic Green Day album like they promised.
