Super Trouper

24-bit digitally remastered digipak edition with extensive liner notes, lyrics and includes two bonus songs: 'Elaine' and 'Put on Your White Sombrero'.

Super Trouper is generally considered Abba's finest album. The overheated disco flourishes of Voulez-Vous were dropped and the sequencing was very nearly perfect. What's more, silly lyrics metamorphose into things of wrenching beauty. The overall tone is rather somber--the unraveling of the band members' relationships underscores every track--but as usual Abba turn melancholy into uplifting pop music. This digipack version of the 1981 album includes two extra songs. "Put on Your White Sombrero" was recorded during the Super Trouper sessions but was replaced on the album by the title track; it's in the band's Spanish vein and comes with a throbbing synthesizer hook. "Elaine," meanwhile, was the B-side of "The Winner Takes It All" single. An uptempo number, "Elaine" is far from being a throwaway. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Super Trouper Reviews

This album was amazing when it came out in the 80's, and sounds even more amazing on th CD. The songs are beautiful and timeless and I wore out the tape when I had it-let's see how long this CD lasts. :)

Although the record is rather dancey, there are great ballads thrown in ("Andante Andante"), as well as the nostalgic "Our Last Summer", reflecting on a happy youthful times back in the late 1960's (). in Paris. Within this track, as well as in "The Piper" and "Happy New Year", ABBA unconventionally used simple structure of three verses and choruses instead of inserted bridges. "Super Trouper" is ABBA still at the top of their game, even though the future of the group at the times of its release started to be uncertain. Moreover, ABBA albums rarely (if ever) worked as one cohesive piece (to this they came close on "The Album"). "Super Trouper" is an album where all the previous experience and successes of ABBA show, making it the most accomplished release the group has ever put out.

The super hits of this record are the worldwide smash, a quintessential breakup tune "The Winner Takes It All", the title track with wonderful backup vocals and flawless melody and the majestically synth-ed "Lay All Your Love On Me". It's a solid, smooth and catchy effort that you won't regret buying. That said, the penultimate studio album is still as close to perfection as ABBA could get. Arrangements are maybe the best Benny and Bjorn ever wrote and they work especially well on songs that as such were not among the album's cream ("On and On and On" or Me and I"). It does not mean, however, that it's the group's best offering by far. This honor would go rather to "Arrival", which contains crisper, stronger songs and also more immediate and catchy hits.

Superb rendition of some of the most beautiful songs of one of the best rock bands of all time.

Here's another great alumb that is on cd. What can i say except abba was without an doudt an group you just had to love one way or another. Rondall

That the piper seduced everybody suggests that he may not be so nice. Weapons of fear were Communism, the Jews and the specter of depression haunting the world in the 1930s. I like The Piper, a relatively unknown song. Super Trouper is considered by many to be ABBA's best album. The Piper is a classic piece.

Is the piper the spirit of music which ABBA is following. In which case, we might think of the piper as Adolf Hitler. Is Napoleon the piper. We have all seen tapes of Hitler's harangues at Nazi rallies. The fire in his eyes. Norway, Frida's home land, was overrun by the Germans. It shows the power of music over an audience.

Such horrors were something baby boomers found hard to fathom. By 1980, ABBA's lyrics had become highly personal as evidenced by their number 1 hit The Winner Takes It All. Sweden stayed out of World War II.
