I think this is by design, that the mechanism used to power the tail and eyes must use as little electricity as possible to conserve the battery life. I'm a cat person and I have a orange tabby, so this clock makes perfect sense to me. So if your kitty is not leveled, it will not work as designed. The clock needs to be perfectly leveled (centered), and perpedicular with gravity. It is nice and thick. The plastic is of high quality.
Once it is leveled, just give the tail a little nudge and it will not stop until it runs out of battery. Some people have given it bad reviews because the tail doesn't move for them. This really is a great clock when setup properly. It is fun and addictive to watch the eyes and tail move. I've been seaching for a quality clock for some time now. I like the fact that it is made in the USA.
From my experience, I have found that it is essential to use a leveler.
