This is an indoor antenna that's designed to capture HDTV from normal VHF and UHF TV tuner frequencies. Provides access to no-cost HD programming Excellent for urban environments where space is at a premium and outdoor antenna installation isn't possible Appealing design with small footprint Anyone can install HDTVa in minutes
The high-performance HDTVa amplified indoor HDTV antenna from Terk Technologies is designed to capture both UHF and VHF signals (channels 2 to 69) while extending the reception range for all local HDTV broadcasts. The HDTVa uses an ultra-low-noise, high-gain amplifier with Terk's exclusive Dual-Drive Amplifier technology for clear reception of both distant and close HDTV and DTV stations. As suitable for those living in city apartments as for those in suburban homes, the compact HDTVa lets viewers experience HDTV broadcasts in full resolution. Designed for total reception versatility, the HDTVa's high-gain antenna array can be oriented either horizontally or vertically within its mounting base to achieve optimum capture of off-air broadcasts. Set the amplifier to high-gain mode to compensate for signals that are too weak or might otherwise be bypassed for a stronger signals nearby. Simplifying your installation, the HDTVa uses Terk's Power Injector to derive power via its coaxial connecting cable. The result? One cable is all you have to connect, making it easy to install the HDTVa atop or near your television. The antenna is engineered to receive all local HDTV channels, with an operating bandwidth covering both the UHF (channels 2 to 13) and VHF (channels 14 to 69) frequency ranges. Its highly directional log periodic UHF and precision VHF elements are designed to receive HDTV broadcasts with maximum signal strength while rejecting all or most interference. The HDTVa is as exceptional in appearance as it is in performance: its curved, tapering, polished-aluminum antenna elements are mounted in a slim base with a contoured front that visually complements the curve of the antenna elements. Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception Reviews
Going back to the rabbit ears and doing more research. My ten year old rabbit ears, with one of the "ears" broken off by the way, gets better HDTV reception than this antenna. I replaced some ugly, old rabbit ears with this HDTV antenna hoping to get AS GOOD a signal as I was already getting, but in a more compact and attractive package. Too bad. Also, this thing is practically useless without both of its rabbit ears (not shown in the misleading picture) fully extended and outstretched, so if by looking at the picture you find it hard to believe that you can get an antenna this compact to pick up so many channels, it's because it's not true. I tweaked it every possible way that I could, and still couldn't pick up 2 of the 6 channels I used the old antenna to get. $40 down the drain.
I watch crystal clear 36 DTV channels (including CBS2, NBC5, Channel 7, Channel 9, Fox32, UPN), without repositioning the antenna. This is a great antenna for HDTVs. I live several miles from downtown. I found that positioning the VHF dipoles in a horizontal position (without extending them) enhances DTV reception.
Has poor signal in Elmhurst Queen where Phillips has no problem at all. This is a crap, does not work in Brookyn (Bensonhurst) at all. Don't buy this.
This way, I don't have to put TV tuner cards in individual machines. - Older RCA FM-VHF-UHF powered bunny eared (with loop, rating 2). This is certainly not a deal breaker, but an annoyance, especially because the antennas extend from the base quite a bit. This thing works great.
It would work even better outside, but it isn't made for that. I was getting horrible reception from indoors from the older RCA and thought I would search for newer powered antennas because I really wanted to get rid of Comcast cable and watch the standard HDTV channels for Houston with DVR capabilities and the DVD library on the PC. I barely had to move it around to start getting channels (many more than any of the others were providing). Antennas used (remembered):. I have tried a few different antennas for getting over the air HDTV for my HTPC that I built for the living room. I am pairing it with the SiliconDust HDHomeRun so that I can watch or record two channels at once (using a splitter). - RCA DIGITAL FLAT ANTENNA (flat white one, smaller sized, powered, not very good, Rating 2). After trying the ones listed below and some others I don't remember, I finally got the Terk after seeing the amount of reviews here on Amazon (originally bought from Best Buy, but ordered from Amazon and will return BB's).
- eVGA inDtube USB tuner card with antenna (worked for a little bit, would not recommend, antenna way too small, Rating 2) I might wrap it or protect it for outside use, that way I won't have to mess with positioning as much. The only thing I would like changed would be a base that was a bit larger or more sturdy. The unit will tip if the bunny antenna portion are not balanced. - Philips MANT940 Indoor/Outdoor HDTV Antenna (powered, Rating 4).
Very good antenna. The only problem with this antenna is that it is very directional.although i can now receive distant signals coming from the north, i have to turn the antenna around to pick up the one local station that transmits only 5 miles away to the south. I am now able to receive DTV signals as far away as 70 miles (I live in the desert Southwest), with fair to moderate signal strength.
