The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Mixing and Mastering Audio Recordings (S.M.A.R.T. Guide To...)

We live in an age where technological advances in the music industry are so commonplace that they seem to happen every day. Many of these advances have made it possible for almost anyone to develop a system capable of producing hit-quality audio. The only bad news is that by opening the doors for everyone, new audio technology has also made a lot more competition. If you're going to have an edge in an increasingly competitive industry, such as music and audio, mixing and mastering skills are essential. Nothing crushes creative potential more effectively than a shabby attempt at an amateurish mixdown. The S.M.A.R.T Guide to Mixing and Mastering Audio Recordings provides proven, time-tested tools to create mixes that compete well in the musical marketplace and compare favorably with the recordings you hear on your favorite CDs and DVDs. Professional-level techniques are explained thoroughly with numerous screenshots in a hands-on, full-color format. Topics covered include setting up for mixdown, mixing all of the rhythm section instruments, addressing surround considerations, understanding the proper use of effects and stereo imaging, and learning mastering techniques that will give your productions the impact and power they deserve. The companion DVD includes audio examples of the concepts discussed in the text, plus step-by-step instructional video examples that show you how to optimize your recordings in crucial situations.

The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Mixing and Mastering Audio Recordings (S.M.A.R.T. Guide To...) Reviews

I was wrong - it is far too basic for anyone that has done any kind of work with tape or digital recording and produced satisfactory results. I've been a hobbyist recording engineer (using multiple cassette decks to do primitive multi-tracking, buidling a Frippertronics rig from 2 completely different open reel decks, sequencing with multiple Merlin's) for 30 years and never seen the inside for a real recording studio. I was hoping this book would tell me the things I didn't know about how to make my demos sound perfect. It might be fine for beginners but it won't make you Eno. I invested in a 24 track HD dead 2 years ago and when it's time to master my tracks to CD/MP3 I'm still not getting it. I bought this book thinking it would help me with my home-studio work. So apparently I know more than I thought because this book doesn't do it.

This book covers the basics and then some. Well worth the cost of the book. offering great tips for the novice audio recording technician. I look forward to other volumes in this series. Philip Whitehead

I take away another star coz of repitition of some points again n again in different chapters. Its a gud read if u can grab the book from a library. I could get "something" out of pieces i would have otherwise discarded coz i didnt know the mixing techniques. I started this book with very minimum mixing knowledge. This book definetely changed the way i listen to music. I take away 2 stars coz the book assumes you know a few technical terms like compressors etc.,.At the same time it is very basic for ppl who know the basics. So its sort of confusing what is the level of skill that is expected from the reader.

If a book and DVD purports to advise fledgling engineers on mixing techniques, at least use material that sounds well mixed and creative rather than stale retreads of 80's MOR. Very disappointing. The author skims over processors, hardware, techniques and meaningful, real world advice, and offers pages of trite advice that can be easily found, for free, online. Finally, the audio and video examples contained on the companion DVD just don't sound very good. Many pages are devoted to setting up tape machines, creating charts for mix sessions, demagnetization and cleaning of tape heads and other dated information that probably wouldn't be relevant to most project studio engineers using DAWs.

the actual text itself is where the bulk of the information is so don't expect too much from the dvd.

analog and digital recording set ups are both addressed throughout.

its written plainly and is very easy to understand.

but the first 200 pages have expanded my concepts of mixing dimensions, effects, and equalization in a big way.

i am fairly new to the recording world, and even though this won't be the last book you'll ever have to buy on the subject, i would highly recommend it for beginner-intermediate level.

but don't let that be a huge influence on your purchase.

i actually haven't even finished the book yet.

this book gives good tips and techniques without a lot of heavy reading.

the included dvd supports articles in the readings with audio and visual examples.
