The Suffering Reviews
It absolutely ROCKS. And, one of the best qualities that The Suffering offers is that you can choose to be good or evil with your gameplay, what you choose will effect the conclusion, and, the side you chose to be on in The Suffering part 1 can be automatically read and transfered over into the Suffering part 2- Ties That Bind (being if you kept the saved data from The Suffering part 1 in your counsel). You are Torque, a man convicted for slaughtering his wife and children where, in prison, he discovers that things aren't quite what they appeared to be. The game itself hasn't gotten the positive reviews it's deserved over the years. The controls (XBOX) are a bit tricky getting fluent with at first, but, when they become your second gaming nature (which doesn't take too long), watch out. This is a staple for Horror/Survival genre gamers and a good ol' scary time for everyone. Now, buy the game, load it up, turn the lights off and prepare for something your won't forget anytime soon. hours of creepy fun.
Life's just too short to play mediocre games. Stick with solid action games like RE4 or Riddick, or lovingly crafted horror titles like the ones mentioned above. How can you go wrong with a horror game set in a prison. I bought a used copy of this game after it was touted by Game Informer as having one of the top ten scariest game moments. He starts hollering the same "come on, m*** f***r." audio clip over and over at ten-second intervals, drawing my wife into the living room so she can scold me for the game's pointless, naughty language.
Combined with the stupid AI, it leads to some real annoyances for example, I was following an NPC, and I stopped to look at something and apparently wasn't following quickly enough for his satisfaction. This could probably be passed of as trying to cast Torque as stony and cold, but in reality I'm sure it was that the dev shop management didn't budget for those little extras that really breathe life into the game. The playability is uninteresting and loose the characters sort of slide across the ground while scissoring their legs instead of looking like they're actually making contact with the ground while running, and so on. Loveless execution, that's how. This game feels like a simple mod of a generic third-person shooter with some prison uniform skins slapped into place. The fact that the game is older really isn't an excuse for its high degree of crappitude there are some truly hair-raising, beautifully crafted horror games that are 4+ years old Eternal Darkness and the 'Haunted Asylum/Orphanage' level in Thief: Deadly Shadows come to mind.
Strongly suggest you skip this game. An iron door would slam right behind him, or a guard would be torn in half immediately before him, and he would have NO REACTION AT ALL (in contrast, think about Resident Evil 4 Leon would crouch slightly in reaction to nearby explosions). The attempted 'gritty' language is just egregious. Torque's lack of reaction to anything around him consistently bothered me.
The story itself has some thought put into it and although it uses checkpoints, it also allows you to save whenever you want. I wouldn't say that I was ever really scared by it, but then it is just a game. There is an interesting collection of enemies and some decent, but basic, weapons. Good atmosphere and game design make this better than average.
You play a character by the name of Torque, and you have been framed for the murder of your family. Also, the thematic material may be too intense for some people.(I forgot to mention there is an extremely high blood and gore factor in this game). As punishment, you are sent to Carnate Island, and put on death row for 8 years until you are executed. The violence is very disturbing, and extremely scary. There is alot of Strong Language, and some drug references. This game is really, in my opinion, an A rated game, masked by an M rating.
;) Good luck. WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD. Imagine a game that is a cross between "Max Payne" and "Silent Hill." That is just what you will get in this extremely unnerving and disturbingly scary game, "The Suffering.". Then, an "earthquake" happens, and bizarre creatures, shaped by the horrific executions they endured, begin to kill the inmates, and guards in many gruesome ways.
I have had the game over a year, and I just cant get past level 5. The trounle I have is I just rin around in circles on the ground. Also some person wrote a review that it was only and the stradgry guide twenty one levels, I do not see 21 levels could fit. I wonder if there 9 levels and the others are bonus. I played 8 hours with a few breaks. I try till get a migrain headace, people tell me to stop, but when they are away I try again. I love the game, but I wish I could get feedback. Today I was running in circls, and then I read that the door to the libray and infirmy were all the back at the so I ran and got into the infirmary, library, and now trying Hardgrave.
