Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 Reviews
This game is one of the best tactical shooters that I have played, and I have played quite a few. When I finally got to the multilayer, I was pleasantly surprised at how tactical it was. This game has such a good story mode that I didn't get to multilayer until I beat the campaign on elite. A lot of tactical shooter are tactical in single player, but loose the tactical aspect in the process of transferring it to multilayer. I liked the multilayer so much that I made a montage and posted it on youtube. If you are a fan of tactical shooters, then this game is a must.
The single player experience can be hard or easy depending on how you play. It is a very cool idea and adds to the game in a positive way. You can save in the single player game almost at any time which is great. I had passed on the first GRAW so when my buddy and I were looking for a new multiplayer game we figured we would try GRAW2 as it had better reviews and was a cheap buy. We have not forayed into the editor or the mods yet but we are headed there soon and hope it will add to the game, if so then this will have been a real gem of a buy. The multiplayer experience so far has been a real challenge, as there are more bots and they change places so they are not in the same spot all the time (In Campaign Mode). Let me say this game did not disappoint although it is rather short. If you play allot of COD4 or other FPS games I do not think this will be very difficult, however it does require more stealth and patience than normal FPS's require.
There are little background noises like dogs barking and planes flying overhead that I though were a nice touch at immersion. The others were very good on single player though, especially the night stealth mission. The sound is good, and I crank the volume so I can hear enemies approaching. that come with a prepackaged assortment of weapons. This is an enjoyable semi-realistic shooter, and the true strength of the game lies in multiplayer. If you can't finish the last mission, do it multiplayer and have respawns turned on so you can at least see the end of the game.
I dislike practically impossible missions. On multiplayer, you have a choice between multiplayer maps where you choose a class (Rifleman, demolitions, etc). Some missions give you an armored "Mule" that carries weapons so you can reload or change what you are carrying. The overhead satellite map with real-time showing of movement is very handy in planning out the next phase of the mission. I finished the single player campaign, but the last mission took over 50 tries. There are many different weapons to choose from and they each behave differently. If you play multiplayer campaign, you do get to choose what to carry with you.
Now that it has come down in price, it is definitely worth it. I would rather have seen the ability to choose exactly what loadout you wanted here. The graphics are nice (although a bit drab, but it is supposed to be a war-torn area in Mexico)and the animations look real. Team members are fairly competent, although they show an alarming tendency to get hung up on moving against something to the point that you give them several move orders instead of just one. This would have been handy in the last mission, where I purposely got the sniper on my team killed so I could pick up his sniper rifle when mine ran out of ammunition. Overall, a 4 out of 5 game single player, edging towards a 5 multiplayer. There are a few gliches every once in a while, like players crashing out of the game (it happened 3 times in two full days of playing over a weekend)or shot enemies that are still standing but arching their back.
You can push the dead standing guys around but I don't know if you can use them as a shield.
This game is at best a slight evolution, really several years behind the curve. There is voice communication - if you pay (as far as I could figure out). The maps here are ok, but there could be more. Not at all like what terrorists in Mexico would likely have in a real battle with US SF troops. This is a fun game, in part because it is a much more deliberate and paced than the BF games and other FPS. There is otherwise nothing modern about this game - in fact it is more like WW1 with automatic rifles. you can type messages, but no automatic messages like in BF (by pressing the function keys, to say need reinforcement, enemy sighted, etc). No indirect fire either.
The single player mission is passable; but the AI has near perfect aim. In multiplayer mode, most servers prohibit grenade launchers, which makes sense; but the soldier is only allowed one grenade.
No mines, sensors, overhead intelligence, communication. The graphics are decent, with bushes and leaves to try to conceal onself in.
I was a big fan of the Ghost Recon games many years ago. But other than some nicer graphics and a few effects, like cars blowing up if hit by grenades, there really is nothing new about this game compared to GR1 from 1999 or whatever.
Worse, there is nothing else really in terms of tools or arms except the rifle, a worthless backup gun (except if you are a sniper you need your handgun sometimes), and a smoke grenade. But there are no open fields or large hills and long distances or other nice terrain features that GR1 had.
It's worth five or ten dollars, but not much more. Only a few bullets kill, and there is no health to get.
Slow load times, crashes occasionally, and seems to be somewhat buggy (on a dual core pentium with 4 GB RAM and NVidia FX9600 on Vista). Great decent game. Good graphics. Very realistic combat (you and enemies die in 1-4 shots). Good weapon selection.
