Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon

Ghost Recon is a deadly game of intrigue and military combat, where you control a top-secret military strike force! Interact with dozens of different characters, including specialists that add distinctive weapons to your team Intense multiplayer action for up to 36 people through an Internet or LAN connection

Set in the year 2008, Ghost Recon is a Tom Clancy-inspired war game that puts you in command of a Special Forces unit pitted against Russian ultranationalists trying to rebuild the former Soviet Union. Although the story arc is grand in scale (in keeping with Clancy's style), the game doesn't involve you in the war's major battles. You'll actually spend most of your time behind enemy lines--rescuing downed fighter pilots, knocking out enemy patrols, ambushing armor columns.

You control a six-man squad, divided into two teams, and you have the opportunity to handpick your squad members (and their equipment) after each mission briefing. You can switch your point of view to any of the six active soldiers--the soldier you control automatically becomes the leader of his team, while the other team operates according to orders you give via a map interface. Thus, you can move one team into a covering position, leave them with orders to provide cover fire, and then lead the other team in to reach your objective. Or, break up your squad and try to achieve two objectives simultaneously.

The level of detail and realism is incredible, right down to the way the soldiers communicate in hushed tones and with gestures. The complexity of the game requires an elaborate controller setup that takes a while to get used to (luckily there are plenty of training missions designed to help you learn the multitude of movement, weapons, and command functions). Once you get the hang of it, you'll find it's worth the time spent in boot camp. --Maile Bohlmann

Pros:

  • Incredible graphics and realism
  • Wide array of tactical options integrates strategy into the action
  • Missions are diverse and challenging

Cons:

  • Controls are complicated, hard to master, and sometimes counterintuitive
  • Dramatic music and "drill sergeant" narration between missions is pretty campy
  • Enemy soldiers sometimes behave too predictably

Note: This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Reviews

Many of the same tactics are still used today in Advanced Warfighter. Love the way the enemy uses his rifle to hobble away when you shoot him in the leg. Mirrors Rainbow Six 3 in many ways.good graphics.

The battles in this game are fast, furious and truly intense. GR has four different classes for each member of your squads (e.g. If you lose a man on the field he is gone for the rest of the mission. However, you can tell a squad to go over to a certain place, like making Alpha team hide at the top of a cliff and pick off any incoming enemy soldiers heading toward your position as you make your way to take out an enemy hideout. They will use this maneuver often but on occasion they will employ other ways to fill you full of lead. The more any member of the GR team is used, the better his skills will get.

The AI in this game will have you second guessing almost every thing you do, they will suppress you with fire and have other members try to flank you. Ghost Recon has some RPGish elements to it. Although there are now new and improved titles in the Ghost Recon series, this is all in all a great game which is now playable on the Xbox 360 as well. demolition and your basic infantry). You will get breaks in the action to catch your breath.

You have two squads at your command, Alpha and Bravo; each has a squad leader and two additional squad mates. Each squad operates as a unit and cannot be separated into individuals. If you get a squad mate hurt in battle he will have to take some time out of action if you want him to heal or you can keep him in the fray, risking the loss of a soldier. You must use strategy; you cannot go into an enemy base with guns blazing and expect to be successful. The game does not stop there it allows you to pick each members weapon and secondary weapon (which there are a lot of).

Far from your typical squad based shooter; Ghost Recon has a few things that distinguish it from the rest.

I actually didn't start playing this game until Island Thunder was already out (which I played like crazy). and it still held up as a great game. The graphics (when it came out) were pretty top-notch and had some extremely fun multiplayer gametypes. Gameplay:. In simple terms, "it was fantastic." There were plenty of maps available, all with different environments. If you like military squad based games, this is definately for you. The gameplay is truly what gave this game it's kick. Sound:.

Explosions, bullets firing.exerything was great. This drove me nuts a bit, but this was fixed by the time Island Thunder came out. I mean, looking back at it today, the game doesn't hold up in terms of graphics and presentation, but the gameplay is still one the best shooters there has been. Everything seemed very realistic and gave the gamer a great gaming experience. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is an incredibly fun first person shooter.

You could choose what class you wanted to play as, Rifleman, Snipers, Support, and Demolition, and then pick your gun kit, which there were also plenty to choose from. It played like a great military squad based shooter and was very tactical, unlike the run and gun games we find on the market today. This was probably my favorite aspect of this game. Lasting Appeal:. One big gripe about the presentation of this game was that the menus were kinda difficult to navigate through (kinda like GR2).

Presentation:. Everything worked in it, it wasn't that hard to pick up and play, and the fact that it actually played like a tactical shooter made it stand out from the rest. The sound in this game was pretty fantastic when it was released. It seemed pretty realistic and along with the sound made a great gaming experience. Graphics:. Okay, let's now talk about it's Xbox Live play. Talk about lasting appeal.this game definatley had some. With it's great multiplayer aspects and Live capabilities, this game had great lasting appeal.

The sounds in the game really made it seem realistic, like you were actually there on the battlefield. People played it up to and through GRIT, and some even played till GR2 came out. You could play the multiplayer portion of this game for hours on end and not get bored, something that's hard to come by these days (except GRAW, hehe). In it's day, Ghost Recon for the Xbox had some pretty sweet graphics, unlike other games on the market back then.

I guess you have to start and work your way up, uinstead of working your way backwards throught the Ghost Recon series as I did. These really didn't tickle my fancy with the gameplay of it and everything else. I'm a big fan of Ghost Recon 2 and Summit Strike.

Little annoyances like not being able to step over a 2" piece of rock jetting out from a cliff edge can get tiresome. I bought this game when it first came out for the Xbox due to the fact it was one of the early FPSs available for LIVE play back then. Once you get comfotable with the controls and put the little problems behind you this game is quite fun in single player. Now the good news as I see it. I actually completed this game on the hardest setting in order to unlock everything and really got into it. The most the average connection will be able to handle is about 3 players online which due to the large maps is pretty dissapointing. Secondly it is not well done on LIVE at all. As cheap as this game is today it is definately worth it in my opinion but if you have no patience then you might want to pass it up.

Shooting a guy from across the river with the 50cal sniper rifle is worth the HUGE amount of work required to unlock it. The best games are generally the hardest, they are the games one goes back to play 1-3 years later. Fisrt off the menu system is TERRIBLE. (Moto GP2, Ghost Recon, PGR2). If you give this game the time it needs to hook you then you will enjoy it. The graphics are good enough but this game was a year or two old when it was ported to the Xbox so today (late 2005) it shows it's age graphically. It is cluncky and confusing and the button presses don't always take during game setup.
