Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Cartridge OnlyWith the help of the code slingers at Vicarious Visions, Activision has brought an amazingly accurate reproduction of THPS 2 to Game Boy Advance. From graphics to gameplay, this game stands up to what you might expect from an N64 version of the game. Unlike the Pro Skater games for Game Boy Color, the first Pro Skater for Game Boy Advance attempts to recreate the same level designs found in the big-screen version. From the Hangar's halfpipes to New York City's huge gaps, you'll be tearing it up through 3D environments filled with special items to collect and objectives to complete

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 doesn't look or play quite like its other incarnations, but the amount of death-defying--or serious injury-defying--tricks you can pull off, and the wild level design, graphics, and responsive controls all work amazingly well for the handheld.

With an overhead isometric view and its use of only four buttons, Hawk vets will need to readjust their attacks. Still, we were amazed by how many tricks have been crammed into this cartridge. For the most part, the visuals are clear and detailed and the skaters are incredibly well animated.

Gameplay hasn't changed much. Initially, there are six levels available (more are unlocked as rewards). After picking a skater, you must perform tricks and locate items to earn loot for buying new gear, which will enable you to improve your skater's stats and continue to the next skate park. The game is sadly without some of the cooler features of the big consoles. For example, you cannot create parks or skaters, and multiplay is sorely missed.

The feeling of accomplishment one gets when perfectly landing a stunt is just as satisfying on the GBA as it is on the PS One and Dreamcast versions. Even folks who don't like skateboarding games will think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a great (and addictive) achievement for the handheld platform. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Incredibly fluid and detailed graphics
  • Responsive controls
  • Many, many tricks
Cons:
  • Somewhat steep learning curve for all gamers, even Tony Hawk vets
  • Missing features of older versions, such as player and park creation
  • No multiplayer feature

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which has been a bona fide hit on every console it has graced, has staked its claim on the Game Boy Advance. The idea is still to perform hundreds of complicated tricks for points, and players can still ride as T. Hawk or any of a dozen pros in the game. Players can create their own skaters from scratch, too, by selecting appearance, gear, clothes, and more. Heck, you can even create your own ideal skate park by building ramps, rails, pipes, and other challenging obstacles.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Reviews

Tony Hawk hit the jackpot when he and Activision Software Company came out with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The second game was different in some ways. The sequel to the game was an even bigger hit, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Every time I play the game I figure out something new, like hidden areas, different tricks, and how to score more points.

I played the game and beat within a couple of days. There are more objectives to accomplish in order to get to the next level. I would recommend this game to anyone who is a skateboarder or is thinking about skateboarding. It helped me when I was skateboarding in real life.

If your just looking for a cool game, this is it. I learned new tricks through seeing how they perform them. The game has new features like new skaters and Park Editor.
