Toshiba 37AV500U 37-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Reviews
I don't use the built in speakers so I don't know if they are any good. The picture quality is superb, the only downside is it doesn't have 1080p. I highly recommend this tv to just everyone. This is the first T.V. But that resolution isn't even noticeable on this size tv. that I have ever bought, and it is amazing.
Regarding that, the auto channel select for Antenna works better than any tv I have ever had. However, after spending so much on our renovation on the house, I decided to go "cheap." Trust me, the pic is amazing. Go figure. (keep that in mind for football games). I actually was planning on getting a 1080 tv for our newly remodeled den. Selects both the analog and digita channels. I may one day get the 1080 40 inch 120hz, but I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Oh.and in our area, the pic with an antenna is MUCH better than what we get on our cable HD channels.
I do mean much research. There are so many to pick from but I believe I got one of the best. I was told by experts and I saw for myself that with this size screen you cannot see the difference, besides 1080p programs are not even broadcast yet and will be years before they are. I am so pleased I made this purchase. It was easy to set up and is attractive. Purchased this TV after much research. Don't even think of getting a 1080p.
Another runner up was the Panasonic 37". The sound is very good also. I looked at many TV's side by side and this one had as good a picture as the higher priced ones and better than the tvs in the same price range. The picture quality is excellent.
Unfortunately however, Toshiba's customer service sucks and its been almost 1 month since i first called them and its still not even being worked on. Great picture, great sound, lots of connections. Do no buy this tv because if it breaks, you're screwed. Luckily the warranty covers this. However after just under 3 months the LCD panel went out. The first 2 months with my new tv were awesome.
He said there was no update for this TV. My advice is to pay no attention to people who claim you cannot see any difference between 720p and 1080p at 37 to 40 inches. Well worth the extra money. I had the local Toshiba service rep come out. I upgraded to the Samsung LN40A530 (a 40 inch 1080p) for about a third more than the Toshiba. I could not find a report online about this problem, so maybe it was a one off. I contacted Toshiba customer service and basically got nowhere.
The deleted (hidden) channels kept coming back, and worse yet unused cable channels started to appear when the channel up/down buttons were used. The difference in picture quality, ease of use, remote control, etc., was amazing. The manual says you can hide channels in the setup menu. I wanted a medium sized bedroom HDTV without paying a high price for a premium model. In my opinion Samsung makes a much better HDTV than Toshiba. It was obvious to me.
Installation and setup with standard cable went fine. I returned the set and decided to try a different model. I expect that with broadcasts going all digital in less than a year, large 720p sets will soon be dinosaurs. Comparable to, or even better than Sony, and that says a lot. The picture was good, but not great (I am spoiled with 1080P on two other high end sets that I own). He tried in vain to delete/hide channels and gave up.
They said there was an update for the TV that would fix the problem. All was well until I tried to delete unwanted channels. After reviewing 37 inch HDTV's, I decided the Toshiba 37AV500U had great reviews and it was relatively inexpensive. He agreed it was a defect in the TV.
