with support for WMA Lossless, WMA, MP3, WAV, WMV, and JPEG formats. The Windows Media Player application even transcodes MPEG-4, AVI, and MOV formats, making it far more versatile than most video-compatible players. Meanwhile, the MES60VK's 60 GB hard drive is capable of holding a ton of digital media, including about 15,000 songs (more than 1,000 complete albums) at 128 kbps, a mind-boggling 30,000 songs at 64 kbps, and a still-impressive 1,700 songs, or 114 hours, of CD-resolution WAV files.

The PC-only device is also PlaysForSure-certified by Microsoft, which means that it will operate with any similarly designated management software or download service, such as Napster, Rhapsody, and Wal-Mart Music Downloads. Users can also subscribe to movies or TV shows via MTV/Microsoft's Urge, TiVo to Go, Starz Vongo, and a host of other sites. And because the MES60VK is automatically recognized by Windows Media Player 10, you won't need to install drivers of any kind.

Controlling the device couldn't be easier. View larger.
The MES60VK's defining feature, however, is its 2.4-inch QVGA display, which offers a resolution of 320 x 240 (65,000 colors) to ensure elite video and picture quality. Viewers who want to enjoy optimal resolution can switch to landscape mode, or they can output the signal to a full-size TV for group viewing. And serious music fans can download and view album covers on the screen, search for their favorite tracks by scrolling through the album covers, or even set a favorite album as a background image.

The device is prepared for future developments as well, as it's one of the first media players that can be connected to and controlled via the Xbox 360's interface. Finally, the MES60VK serves as a USB host, letting you connect a digital camera to the unit's USB port and then transfer and view the pics immediately--no PC required.

Additional features include a built-in FM tuner with 30 station presets, a docking cradle for charging, and a pair of headphones with an integrated remote control. The MES60VK, which offers roughly 20 hours of music playback per charge, measures a compact 2.38 by 3.94 by 0.62 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Toshiba MES60VK Gigabeat 60 GB Portable Media Player (Black) Reviews

It is now May 5th of 2008 and so far I have not had a SINGLE problem. I use Amazon Unbox so a good majority of those movies are TV shows but I have never once had trouble transferring songs or movies to the device. My Gigabeat currently houses 5500 songs 48 movies and 3300 photos. I purchased this wonderful little device on February 10th of 2007. I have owned 13 other MP3 players ranging from a Zen Nano to Ipods and this one I have found to be the best.

But they never sent a label and when I followed up, they said that they no longer paid shipping on repairs (I wonder if that is because they have so many defective units). It never lasted more than two hours on a full charge and would discharge itself completely when not in use, even though it was powered off and locked. I contacted customer service a second time and was told I could send it in for repair again. I finally sent it back in on my own dime and was called and told that they would not fix the unit under warranty, I was two months late and my warranty had expired. They even offered to send me a postage paid packing label so I wouldn't have to pay the freight a second time. The unit subsequently developed skipping problems and data transfer errors.

I bought this product and it had battery problems out of the box. I could pay $160 to have the unit fixed. All of the issues remained. (by the way, I am a Rhapsody user and everytime the unit battery runs down to 0, it loses all its song licenses, so I not only had to wait to recharge it, I had to resync it everytime). Well I am going to take that $160 and use it toward buying anything other than a Toshiba product. I sent the unit in for warranty repair.

It came back with absolutely no improvement.

i love it. and verry easy to use just open your windows media player and sink your favorite songs and if your movies or videos are allready converted to wm you can sink those with know problem to. better than the old apple ipod. allso watch your video by conecting it to your TV. it has video ujustments and a radio you dont have to go to the i store or download software for this to work. this is one of the greatest product by far. I like the huge memmory and u can.

I would love if I knew how to make each clip in the video file play continuously without having to manually play each individual video. I wish it was more compatible with video files and did not have to convert all to WMA format.I found that I couldn't convert some video files.I would get an error message. 3. Also, some files, when you convert them, lose clarity and that defeats the purpose of converting the file in the first place.

(some settings pull more on the battery than others). If you are watching video, maybe 2.5 hours on a full charge.that might be a little weak as far as battery strength goes in my opinion. But, a simple solution for this is to keep a car charger with you when your using it in a vehicle, and you will never have problems with battery life. I mainly purchased this to listen to music and audiobooks.you can also run slideshows of your pictures will music is playing as well.I would say that I am overall very pleased with my purchase. These aren't major issues though.

2. It is very easy to work with and has lots and lots of storage space.I like being able to see the album covers when I play songs either on the display or on the TV screen. If I could change anything about this product, those things would be:. If there is a way.I haven't figured it out yet.

I wanted to wait a good year before I wrote my review. 1. The battery life: don't get me wrong, It will last all day with moderate use if you are listening to music.apprxmtly 7-8 hours.depending on how you have the device set.

I have reached that point with positive opinion on this product.

A Joke. Toshiba MES60VK Gigabeat 60 GB Portable Media Player (Black). Used to love the Toshiba line. Yes mail, regular mail, like the post office, with a stamp.

We purchased this for our daughter. So, when purchasing the Gigabeat, I didn't hesitate. Shame on you. I own their laptop, two high definition tv's, their high definition dvd player, and a regular dvd player. It just failed, and they said, tough luck, you're out of warranty. I will never purchase from, or recommend Toshiba again, and I will take every opportunity I can to let every consumer know what their customer service is.

Hello. System failure, hard drive failure. By days mind you - not months, not years, just days it is out of the warranty period. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. They are so non-consumer oriented, you cannot even send customer service an email at Toshiba, nor can you speak to a supervisor. What a huge disappointment Toshiba.

You have to mail them.

Aren't they a technology company.

Well, the thing turned out to be a lemon.

Sent it out twice for repair, both times losing over 1200 songs my daughter paid for.

No emails.

Nice company, considering what faithful customers we are.

Guess what.

I will be writing their corporate office also.

They told us if it happened a third time, even after the warranty expired, they would replace or refund our money.
