Traveling Wilburys (2CD/1DVD, Deluxe Edition)
Featuring classics like "Handle With Care," "End Of The Line," and "Heading For The Light," super-group Traveling Wilbury's Collection highlights all of the band's music and previously unreleased bonus tracks through this re-mastered double album. The DVD features behind the scenes footage of the band writing and recording, along with their 5 video clips. Limited edition Deluxe package includes 40-page booklet and other exclusive extras.
The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

Traveling Wilburys (2CD/1DVD, Deluxe Edition) Reviews
A quick visit to youtube and you can see the whole thing (while there you can see a bunch of other appearances the Wilbury members made around the 1988-1990 period and their inclusion is debateable as true Wilbury 'Canon' for inclusion here so I won't complain). But we catch a glimpse of John Candy and Eric Idle at the beginning of that version and wonder where they went. I ought to give this set only two stars for the glaring omissions and edited footage but the music itself is so good I can't give it less than three. Why must they chop off everyones heads just to fill up your entire screen (1.78:1 new standard of course over the original 1.33:1). Not to mention the B-Sides and extended songs. In a world where people accept greatest hits albums over complete box sets (where your dollar spent on a particular band could be considered final) we allow these companies to make more and more of the same thing hoping that the next set will be just a little bit closer to being complete. But my real complaint is the cropped video. Anyone who knows anything about how a DVD's anamorphic widescreen works can tell you how it can better fill your widescreen tv, but in this case you're losing information on the top or bottom (or top AND bottom) of your screen.
Hello. But the most obvious piece they made that was left off this set is the original Wilbury Twist video. Presented here is the '2007 version', which is fine. I'm shocked no one else has problem with this or has even noticed for that matter. What an oversight. So please when something is not 'complete' as it ought to be feel free to express it in places like this or even better to the record companies themselves or we'll never get what we want. They do this to all the videos and the documentary.
Back to what they 'left off': the Nobody's Child video. I know this set doesn't claim to be complete but why all the missing songs and videos. I know of a Traveling Wilburys bootleg that is album length and full of demos and cover versions they could of taken from, perhaps on a fourth disc. What is then missing is a very valuable part of the spirit of this band, how much fun they are and how fun their music can be. Gone is Cheech Marin and Woody Harrelson as well as a bunch of other recognizable actors clowning around.
The music I never heard is okay. The radio play stuff is as good as ever.
I will enjoy these cd's for all the rest of my days. Being able to watch them at work on some of their very last projects is, as they say, PRICELESS. I was so happy to be able to buy this Deluxe Edition set and for such a remarkably reasonable price. When they got together and became The Traveling Wilburys it was better than a dream come true because it was a dream I never even considered having. Having the dvd is very special to me because of the late great Roy Orbison and George Harrison. The rest of the band are also some of my all time favorite musicians. So, I thank you Amazon.com for making the product available and quite affordable.
I had been interested in checking this band out for a while. Haven't had a chance to watch the DVD yet, but the music more than makes the purchase worth it. I couldn't pass up on the ten dollar lightening deal when I saw it. Really reminds me of the supergroup "The Highwaymen" in that every member meshes so well with one another, yet each one brings their own style to the table. Definitely a great listen. If you like all the artists as individual acts, then you can't go wrong with this band.
Great product, good timing on delivery by Amazon. This is a great alblum; so many cuts are just one of a kind.
