Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB External Hard Drive Reviews
is better to go with firewire if your pc has the ports. only thing i found i didn't like is that it is only usb compatible. although most pc's do not have esata yet, you can purchase esata ports from various hardware sites if you are even slightly tech savvy. esata transfers data at 3gb/s vs 480 mb/s that usb puts out. also, even better than firewire is esata. really easy to install. this is a great product. usb is not really fast for data transfer.
Would recommend this device very highly. I am currently using this device as a backup for my Windows Home Server and it works fantastic. The wake-up time is very quick since there seems to be no noticable delay. The device goes into standby-mode after about 15 minutes of not being used which is quite nice for a backup device that mostly just sits idle.
Buy and use only at your own risk. I have DJ'ed with this drive a mere 3 times and used it maybe 10 times for transfers so its brand new. HUGE MISTAKE. I went to pick the drive up and the entire casing fell apart and the hard drive itself fell out. Perhaps I got a defective one but that doesnt help me now. Between songs a 15-30second lag time.
I had a friend who took it and put it in his own computer as a secondary drive to retrieve files. I figured -WHY NOT- get a TB drive to have everything I dj off of plus karaoke on one drive. First off for DJ's - this is slow and more so when using the VirtualDJ program.
Here is my own dilemma. I wish to GOD I would have read more reviews and product guides before buying - I am a mobile DJ that just took over a karaoke business. It is going back to the store for me to find something better which I will be reading reviews for the rest of the night.
I have lost the karaoke job at the bar for now all because of a very faulty product. As for now - Thank GOD I had all the DJ music backed up on my wife's laptop and a 160gig seagate. He rendered the whole thing useless and broken.
That can be forgiven though as the drive itself is massive.
Annoying, though, is the lack of a power button on the unit, so it's going to stay on all the time, spinning away, unless you unplug it. Looks nice, is rather quiet, and is well vented. 7200rpm might cut it for a sub-500gb HDD, but it is pretty laggy on this 1tb My Book. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent hard drive which I bought since none of my Western Digital (or Maxtor) hard drives have ever failed me. Not terrible or a deal-breaker though.
Since I'm sure you understand the basics of an external hard drive so let me make this brief. I've had the drive a month and it's great. 1TB for this price is fantastic. It is quiet, it is fast, the software provided is garbage trial-ware but you don't really care because you're going to delete it all when you reformat the drive to NTFS anyhow. This drive worked perfectly right out of the box. Best of luck to you.
