Western Digital My DVR Expander 1 TB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S10000VN (Black) Reviews

I have a Directv HR21-100 dvr. This drive is recommended by Directv but not supported. I bought it to increase my storage capacity. When you connect this to your DVR (HR2*) you will not have access to the internal drive. You will have to add all your favorite channels and series recording options to the new drive so you may want to write them down before you install it. The recordings you have on your internal drive will not be copied to the new drive. The internal drive will be disabled but will still have all your recordings and other settings intact. The only way to access them is to disconnect this external drive. It wasn't a big deal because I viewed and archived all the shows I wanted to keep (DVD's). Instructions to install: Pull the power cord from your dvr. Hook the included power cord up to the external drive and wait a few seconds for it to spin up to speed then hook up the e-sata cable to the external drive and the HR2*. Plug the dvr back in and wait for it to start up. It will boot up and fomat the drive. After you're back up and running, add your favorite channels and your series options and enjoy over 200 hours of HD recording and over 900 hours of SD programming. No negative issues experienced. Plug n Play n enjoy!

I hooked this up to a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR. I followed another's advice to plug it in live, and that did not work. It came up with an error and locked up the cable box. I notice that the connector was a little dirty on the cable box (3 years old). So here is what I did. I unplugged the cable box, used a combination of paper towel, twist tie, isopropyl alcohol (minimal), and canned air (to dry it) to clean the connector contact surfaces. I plugged back in the cable box, allowed it to boot, turned the cable box on and verified it was working ok. Then I turned off the cable box (not unplug). Then I turned on the new drive (give it a minute to do it's self checks), and plugged in the eSATA cable to the cable box. Then I turned on the cable box, and within a minute it recognized the new drive and walks you through the formatting. I was 71% on the internal 160GB drive and went to 8% after adding the 1TB drive. I am just wondering how many that bought the SIIG cable were really just dealing with dirty contacts ... ?

Recordings glitch.
Contacted Western Digital. They Verified it is NOT compatible
with my 8300HD (160GB internal HD).
The WD website only reports TIVO compatability with the 1TB version.
Only the WD 500GB Version is listed as compatible with the SA 8300HD.
I even tried a shorter cable. Didn't work.
Item returned for refund !!!

I use this with my TiVo HD and it works perfectly (after I used the SIIG cable). Do yourself a favor buy the SIIG cable with your order. As many others have found out, the cable that comes with this thing is worthless. My TiVo would continually reboot/reset on it's own until I replaced the cable. I would get anywhere between 1 hour to 24 hours in between failures, but then it would start rebooting over and over until I powered everything down, pulled the cable and re-inserted it, and the powered everything back up. Since I replaced the cable, the TiVo has not rebooted once!

Otherwise this thing is great, you don't hear it at all.

This DVR did not work very well with my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR. The sound and video would get very jittery every two or three minutes. I purchased the SIIG eSATA cable as suggested in a couple of the reviews and that did not fix the problem.
